I sometimes wonder if America is doomed to remain more conservative than europe from now onward. If it's simply too big to change. If it's media is simply too big to dislodge. If it's corporate coffers are too big to exhaust. And if it's populace is too complacent to change. I even wonder if we're even worse off than Britain in that regard.

(Especially in light of super tuesday and the one all-enveloping-demographic-that-could potentially-force-change sitting on its hands)

Lovely night, no?

Why would you frame the question this way? For one the level of 'conservative' a nation is isn't a single measure, for two the only answers are "It's doomed forever," or "There's hope," both of which you can probably diagnose as unhelpful responses, and for three why would you be using Europe as the benchmark, a comparison which does nothing to elucidate the problems present nor the path forward.

Call me a pessimist, but I think I have come to the rough conclusion that the immediate aftermath of World War II was pretty much the last gasp of any major positive movement towards labor in economic reform. Europe just happened to be more ambitious in the reforms it decided to tackle (healthcare, robust public transportation, etc...) and enjoys the fruits of those decisions when it can. Neither continent seems able to recapture that enthusiasm for reform on the institutional level and now they are just stewards of steadily sinking ships. It just happens that Europe might have a few more lifeboats.

If I had to name a culprit I would say it is an aging population in both continents unwilling to accept the need for change and so terrified by the concept of immigration of the other (Mexican/Muslim) that they are willing to sink with the ship instead of trying to salvage it.

Bernie hasn't even lost you simpering twerp.

Jesus Christ, save your doom for after the convention stitch up, until then keep fighting to ensure a stitch up can't happen. There's still 37 primaries to go, 2480 delegates by my calculations, save your pant pissing for July. Get out the vote, campaign, phone bank, stop being whiny little turd and do something rather than mewl about doom and gloom. He's running against a man who can't even remember who is the leader of China or who he served as VP under. If it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing.

The only way America is doomed to remain so liberal is if people given to a couple of setbacks like it's the end of the world. Get back up and get back out there, knocking on doors, phoning people, donating if that's all you can do.

The country was founded upon religious nuts that were fleeing Europe. Maybe if the Moon or Mars gets colonized they'll all flee there and the US will be a socialist utopia.

More conservative in what way?

Just because our system of healthcare does not make us destitute, doesn't mean we don't have our own hell reality to deal with.

You are confusing the people with the political and economic elites who actually run things. The people want good government and welfare spending. The actual institutions and bureaucracies that run the government and society have made it clear that any downward redistribution in the west is off the table entirely.

Your average everyday person knows the system is rigged against them and thus votes seldomly if at all, it's only the comfortable/educated class that make up the 'outer party' so to speak that is inordinately focused on political electorialism and the idea that voting can change things.

In the US, as well as most western "democracies," the voter is just a speedbump in the policymaking process in a system that has been taken captive by big business.
