I lurk on r/the_donald on Reddit and something weird is happening there. There are a lot of threads their devoted to Tom Fitton. They haven't stopped gushing over Trump, but the Trump threads appear less frequently now, and the Fitton threads seem to be taking over, to the point that I've seen some posters there joke that they should rename the subreddit to "the_fitton".

I'm also seeing something similar on the website of cartoonist Ben Garrison (https://grrrgraphics.com). Trump doesn't appear so much in his cartoons lately. Garrison is one of the biggest Trump sycophants out there, and he likes to draw Trump as a very muscular guy. But he hardly draws Trump anymore. He doesn't criticize Trump in any way, he just doesn't mention him.

Something similar happened in Germany as the tide of WW2 turned against it. Hitler was mentioned less and less often in German newspapers. His photos appeared less often, his name was less mentioned. There was zero criticism of Hitler, just fewer mentions.

I think this is a sign that Trump's star is fading. Liberals seem to think that Trump's supporters are hopelessly devoted, but I think beside the facade their is a lot of hidden anxiety and frustration. This, I think, will lead to a dramatic collapse similar to what the Germans went through after their defeat, or what the Russians went through during de-Stalinization.

I've also studied the Lost Cause, which is how southerners in the United States whitewashed the history of the Civil War. I read a book on the Lost Cause and it says that while the war was going well, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that the war was about preserving slavery, and they open and even proud of it; but as soon as the Confederacy surrendered there was a universal desire in the hearts of southerners to disavow themselves of their association with slavery, which led to a century-long effort to minimize its significane as a cause of the American Civil War. I expect something similar will happen with Trump.

Another compelling book to read would be They Thought They Were Free by Milton Meyer, which is by an American officer who was in Germany just after the war and interviewed German citizens on what they thought of Hitler and his crimes. It's an eye-opening book as to how people deal with guilt. Meyer was shocked at the Germans' general unwillingness to do any introspection. They were ashamed only for losing the war, and they rebuked the Nazi leadership only for technical mistakes (e.g. attacking Russia before consolidating earlier conquests, persecuting Jewish scientists who could have given Germany the atom bomb, etc.).

Taking ten seconds to check that cesspool, the top twenty threads are about Tom Fitton because they're posted by Tom Fitton, trying to boost his youtube channel.

Oh poo poo, that is such an obvious thing that I should have done, I am embarassed.

Still, there is the case of Ben Garrison. He hasn't shown Trump in a cartoon since February.

Fitton is one of the very few approved posters currently. Due to the current lockdown of The_Donald, there are hardly any new posts. Only pre-approved subscribers are currently allowed to make new posts. Fitton seems to be the only active poster of the approved list. It's a ghost town there.

Bummer I was getting excited there for a minute
