Whether it was necessary to immediately jump out, and whether he had actually checked to see if the other crewmen were alive or dead, has proven a lot more controversial. A tail gunner on the plane ahead of them named Chester Mierzejewski contradicted Poppy Bush's account of how damaged the aircraft was and said he believes Bush likely could have saved his men's lives had he not bailed immediately.
