Any time anyone brings up Blackgaze, 90% of the time they're talking about Sunbather. As much as I love that album, I think it tends to clog up the discussion quite a bit. What other records in the genre would you all recommend?

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

This or kodama.

I blur blackgaze together with atmospheric black metal and postblack and whatever new band pitchfork is trying to shove in my face that's just copying weakling. So uh yeah, just listen to MareCognitum instead.

Souvenirs is an all-time favorites, though not super *black*. Just the guitar and drums.

I also love Les Discrets' first two albums, which sound like harsher Alcest. Probably Neige's fault.

Wolves in the Throne Room comes to mind, although most of their stuff sounds "samey" they definately have a unique sound going for them. I cannot tell one song from another, but I do know that I'm listening to WITTR

Panopticon is similar to above mentioned Agalloch (who I also love but we don't need repeats), but has his own american folky spin on things

Ghost Bath has a very similar album to Sunbather named Moonlover. I prefer their more "unique" stuff from Torment, although I really don't like the wailing

Oathbreaker just ended the whole post-hardcore / blackgaze genre with their album Rheia. For me nothing will ever top this one. poo poo is so depressing that I can barely listen to it, but it's just so drat good

Leviathan has some songs that for me border on blackgaze. Definately not a fan of everything he releases, but there are some tracks I regularly go back to

Here's my top few that I don't already see posted
Lantlos - .neon, but really their whole discog
Aster Wreath - Some Small Star
An Autumn for Crippled Children - Lost, but really their whole discog [2]
Botanist - Collective: The Shape of He to Come, but really their whole discog [3]
Cold Body Radiation - The Great White Emptiness, but only this album the rest of their stuff isn't great

All of these are better than Sunbather imo and represent varied styles on the genre. Lantlos go for a dark and dreary atmosphere, Aster Wreath goes for a very soft spoken "beautiful" take on raw blackgaze, Botanist has a warm summer feeling to their discography, AAfCC goes for more of a DSBM feeling in their work, Cold Body Radiation just kinda sounds like dying peacefully.

I don't think WIITR have that much shoegaze in them really but if you're going to mention them you should probably also mention Weakling - Dead As Dreams, since that's where they got their sound from.

Well I figure "atmospheric black metal" has some crossover with "blackgaze" so I threw it out there

Forgot one of the early "blackgaze" thingies, I think he was even onto it before Alcest. Jesu, this is his first release, he got more electronic and softer over time.

I think Jesu is a good recommendation if you're talking about people combining metal and shoegaze generally, but there's very little black metal in that mix.

An Autumn For Crippled Children is pretty good. Much heavier on the gaze part.

Blackgaze minus BM vocals and blast beats, but keeping the tremolo picking and dialing reverb to max, is pretty much standard post-metal.

Neige sings on all Lantlos albums except the last one, Melting Sun (and I assume the new one that's been in production for like 3-4 years now). You can pretty much point to any Neige project and find good blackgaze.

There aren't any black metal riffs there though, it sounds like Godflesh mixed with shoegaze.

The blackgaze starterpack that isn't Sunbather goes something like this:

Lantlos (Neon/Agape)

Heretoir - self titled is probably their best release. More heavy on the gazey part.

Thranenkind - Eine Momentaufnahme is probably my favorite release as an EP, its probably the rawest but the later ones have a more alternative feel to it that just didn't gel with me

An Autumn for Crippled Children / Cold Body Radiation - both are by the same guy, and are very good. The Autumn project leans towards black metal, the Cold Body project leans towards shoegaze. Favorite albums are The Long Goodbye and The Great White Emptiness respectively.

Unreqvited - they lean more depressive suicide black metal, but I would call them a very bleak blackgaze band.

And my favorites:

sadness - Probably the best blackgaze artist out there today. You'll Just Forget has probably been played hundreds of times:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guBz2wW-BIM

Violet Cold - a one man project from Azerbaijan, he consistently puts out quality. Magic Night is my favorite release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX_ebq-c7eI
