This song In Time is canonically by the Wyld Stallyns, and it's really pretty good, i mean it's very late 80s but i like it

This pretty badass metal/classical piece was canonically played by Beethoven himself in the keyboard shop of the San Dimas mall, i guess he's not a ficitonal guy but his role in the iflm was fictional (or was it)

Important vocab word for this thread:

Diegetic music or source music is music in a drama (e.g., film or video game) that is part of the fictional setting and so, presumably, is heard by the characters. The term refers to diegesis, a style of storytelling.

I imagine most of the music posted in this thread will be diegetic, but feel free to also post about fictional bands from books where there's no actual recorded music, or some band you just made up that you think would be cool

I am not that familiar with the oeuvre of the og josie and the pussycats, but their theme song is of course well known, and its good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEdWvYA0icg

but I mention them more because the music of the (underrated, but now low-key cult fav) 2001 live action version.

theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKiEZDedJl8

it features the talents of artists I really like otherwise, including kay hanley (of letters to cleo) on vocals & writing, songwriting by anna waronker (of that dog.), and really quite an impressive lineup of other contributors.

some highlights:

not only does the soundtrack slap, the movie itself is really good if you appreciate irony and sly social critique. it's got plenty of anti-capitalist messages for today's crazy kids!

Oh man, I love fictional bands.

Otis Day & the Knights - Shout

I'm the last person that I'd expect to get into a gospel album, but I found myself fascinated by the story and the music of the fictional "Hope County Choir" that was produced for the Far Cry 5 album. It's music made by the fictional doomsday cult that you're pew pewing all of your bullets at in which they sing (via a nonfictional Nashville choir) about their apocalyptic worldview.
Article about the production about the album

Dethklok's a really strong contender too.

Doug's Garage Band also a good fictional band with a talking heads flair

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T2d2FRh0BM

there's also that ep of pete and pete where he sees a garage band playing and becomes obsessed with a song "I Was Around" that he can't find again (I've known that feeling) and it drives him mad to the point of trying to recreate it himself
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zKyEKEs4us
it's actually a real band, Polaris (they also did the theme song), but I would claim that they are playing the part of a fictional band of the same name in the fictional (or is it??) universof pete and pete, so i think it counts

Dolenz described The Monkees as initially being "a TV show about an imaginary band... that wanted to be the Beatles that was never successful".[2] Ironically, the success of the show led to the actor-musicians becoming one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. The Monkees have sold more than 75 million records worldwide[3][4] making them one of the biggest selling groups of all time with international hits, including "Last Train to Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer", and "I'm a Believer". Newspapers and magazines reported that the Monkees outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined in 1967,[5][6] but Nesmith admitted in his autobiography Infinite Tuesday that it was a lie that he told a reporter.[7]

I love that last bit about fiction and reality chasing each others' tails

Lest we forget when Stinky Wizzleteats brought happiness and joy to the 90s.

On Home Movies, the band Scäb performed the music for most of Brendon's movies. Home Movies - Mr. Pants

"Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah" was a song written for the Jetsons (in-universe, it was co-written by George and Judy Jetson) and performed by the fictional "Jet Screamer" that ended up being covered in the 90s by the Violent Femmes.

DeVo was originally an imaginary band in an art film Mark Mothersbaugh was doing in school, and he wound up recruiting friends to perform the music and eventually they started performing as DeVo.
I also remember that I once found an edit of Black Sheep that used Envy's vocals from Clash at the Demonhead performance along with splicing in some unused bits of Brie Larson singing and also seemed to have some editing to just make some bits of Emily Haines sound more like Brie Larson and my ex-girlfriend was convinced that was the 'real' version of the song and thought Metric's version was a cover.
Weirdly enough she actually knew who Metric was before Scott Pilgrim.
