I was growing some vegetables back at the start of the year with a grow light and a leftover storage bin as a hobbyist thing, but I'm under no illusion that I could've upscaled it into self-sufficiency. If I had the resources for something like that I wouldn't be complaining about how poo poo everything is.

there was a lot of DIY and homespun activity during ww2 if you want to classify that as a disaster period. Victory gardens and whatnot.

In real life it seems like when things go real bad you just become very poor and then operate under the limitations being very impoverished brings and not become some sort of low tech pioneer surviving on your wits in the wilderness.

Like why don't poor people right now just get some aspen hamsterwood and grow mushrooms if they want to eat? If they aren't doing that now under a full society why am I going to be able to in a situation that is 1000x more dysfunctional? Am I just the protagonist and thus better at it all?

Because one of the most unspoken yet powerful poverties in capitalist society is the poverty of time. It's the "why do poor people grab drive through instead of just cooking a nice meal at home" argument.

And this situation is unprecedented, in that there is a very large excess of free time for many. Not only that, but so many people are working from home that you can spend 6 hours a day working sprinkled with a few minutes planting in the garden and be effective at both.

i'm aware ownership of land is a distant dream for most but price is extremely variable per region, and soil is the real gold

gonna need to address this.

not only land, but land with water. homesteading and self sufficiency and community resilience and stuff all hinges on having land to grow food on. there's also a minimum lead time of 4-6 months between readying the ground and seeing any food production from it.

I realize everyone is at least vaguely aware already, but that distant dream needs to get a lot closer and it needs to get closer, like, sooner. the problem is compounded by rich assholes fleeing cities, as they do, and driving up prices.

either we need to pool our resources and go in on some utterly doomed goon commune/community garden spaces or figure out some clever way to start expropriating land or claiming some squatters rights that won't be easily overturned by law or by force.

THUNDERDOME LOSER
Land needs to be worked to produce food tough. If society collapses farm machinery will quickly run out of spare parts and/or the petrol to run it. So any farm will need a lot of hard manual labour to be worth anything. Even if you can`t afford to set up your own farmstead you can still have a future as a landless agricultural worker for the big landowners. In time they might grant you the right to work a portion of their land for yourself in return for a percentage of your harvest in rent and the rigth to call on you to work for free on their estate fo a certain number of days pr year. At this point you and your male relatives will naturally be expected to contribute to the defence of your community under the leadership of your benevolent landlord.
It`s not all doom and gloom.

Sure, this is what I do.

Ingredients:
Spores
Grain Spawn
Wood chips
Bucket
trash bag

Spores
Make a spore print from fruiting mushroom, or purchase from a third party. You can do a spore print, then store on an agar plate (which I've done), or you can purchase a premade agar print or spore syringe from a third party). I store the spores in a box in my refrigerator. They last for years in a dormant state and can be used indefinitely as a starter culture.
2. Grain spawn
I use organic rye seed, but I hear good things from bird seed. For rye seed: hydrate in a bucket with 1 part coffee, 3 parts water, 1 tbsp gypsum for 24 hours. Take mixture and dump into pot, and bring to boil on stove for 15 min. Afterwards, drain and wash seeds in sink under cold water, then spread on baking sheets to cool. Let cool and dry out to the touch, usually takes 24 hours. Afterwards. put into half-full mason jars with aluminum foil top, or into specialty grain spawn bags. Pasteurize in pressure cooker for 120 min full pressure. Let cool off and remove from pressure cooker. Store bags on shelf somewhere for about a month. If there is no growth at the end of a month, and no condensation on bag, congrats, you have a sterile growth media!
3. Inoculate
Inoculate growth media with a sliver from agar plate, or from spore syringe. Make sure you do this in a sterile environment with gloves on. I use a bunsen burner burning in front of inoculation spot to minimize air contaminants. Let the grain spawn colonize for about 1 week. take a look and make sure growth is completely white. That means it is healthy. Any discoloration on growth, throw out grain, as it is contaminated.
Inoculation takes about a month.
4. Wood chips
I use Aspen wood hamster bedding from pet store. Cover with hot water in container, and let sit for 24 hours. A way to sterilize media.
5. Bucket
Take a 5 gallon bucket and lid and drill a bunch of 1/4 inch holes all over it. Use rubbing alcohol and wipe down all of inside and outside of bucket. Layer the wood chips and grain spawn over each other like you're making a layer cake. About an inch per layer til you get to top of bucket. cover with lid. cover with trash bag and place in dark corner. After a week, smell the bucket. If it smells like nothing, you've got a healthy spawn. After about a month, take the bucket, take the trashbag off, and put on a dark corner of your porch.

Leave inside if temperature outside is above 80 degrees or below 65 degrees, in freedom units.

there has to be an easier way, professional mushroom growers, I think, use manure in dark areas or caves, hardly super sterile.

edit: I stand corrected, commercial mushroom farms sound like a huge pain in the rear end also.

It isnt as much of a pain in tye rear end once youve got a rye mother going. You just let a jar grow, plop a bit in the next jar, let that bit grow. Also after you get your space set up and you learn how to be sterile it gets to be not so bad.

I fuckin hate mushrooms, fortunately a lot of simple veggies are pretty easy to grow anyway.

Yes, because otherwise humans would have gone extinct multiple times. We are not extinct yet, ergo survival skills survived. Plus knowing how to sew and fix simple machines and grow food and such has saved me and my family actual money on a regular basis, and I'd say it's been a significant factor in my own personal survival in the 21st century. I can think of quite a few rent checks that would have been a lot dicier if I'd not been able to get around using cash for necessities.

TBH the likely probability is that a lot of us would die, and I'm not personally super optimistic about my odds even though I have y'know a community with people who know a lot of these skills already. However, anybody who makes it through a few waves of climate disaster and then dies (either alone or as a community) because they never figured out how to build a fire or sew some clothes when it was easy is gonna feel pretty loving dumb.

unironically, the tiny little town I'm living in used to have its own steel works. engines can run off alcohol, alcohol can be produced p easily. keeping enough tillers and tractors running to do small-medium scale farming isn't an insurmountable problem. people did it pretty routinely +/- 100 years ago.

redneck ingenuity can keep us running on tractors being towed by honda civics where the engine has been swapped with an outboard engine until western society remembers how to make stuff

we do not need to move backwards into feudalism, we can move forwards into neoprimitive postapocalyptic agrarian socialism

That’s really boring so I see why the bunker style survivalism is more popular

in my mind this is the special interest of permaculture and organic agriculture (to some extent)
a lot of it encourages low-tech techniques or manual-powered techniques
like rain drip soap-making barrels or high-efficiency manual tillers

its also a lot better for the environment.

like this thing, much better than a hoe and you could build it out of a shopping cart and a stick

Is there such a thing as a self-reliance 101 compendium?
How to sew, how to maintain a small efficient plot, large-batch cooking and canning, etc?
