Is it some kind of celebration? Like lighting off fireworks on the 4th of July in the US?

It's a Dutch rural tradition called Carbidschieten, traditionally you use a milk can to launch either the lid of the can or a ball, although people having been making bigger and bigger carbid canons each year. The explosion is the point, not shooting or hitting anything, same as fireworks.
