when obama won in 2008, there was a thread in LF with this title. at the time, the GOP was on the ropes and it seemed that the infighting was threatening to tear the party apart, even though it was hard to say what that would actually look like in practice. it didn't happen, the party simply ratcheted itself to the right as it has been doing since the 60s, and the party nominated tuemp for president then he won and served a full term, then lost in a humiliating defeat to a worthless dipshit. so the party is again beset with infighting. this thread is to document both the infighting and the developments of the GOP in general, both in the political sphere and in the conservative media landscape. the pattern since goldwater has been this: republicans get elected, and make compromises with the dems, as happens in government. the ones who make those compromises are called RINOs, and get primaried out by candidates who are more extreme than they are. those more extreme candidates, in the course of governing, compromise with the dems, and are replaced by people even more extreme than they were. rinse repeat. the most prominent elections in this trend are the republicans who were elected in 1964 when goldwater lost to lbj, the conservatives who rode in on reagan's coattails in 1980, the gingrich revolution in 1994, the tea party wave in 2010, and whatever the gently caress happened in 2016 and 2020. each group was more extreme then the last, and the democrats continued reaching for a "center" that was increasingly to the right so now here we are after several iterations of increasing republican extremism, and the question becomes whether or not there is a limit to how far it will go. what happens in both in the political and the media sphere between now will determine the course both of the gop and the entire garbage rear end country. are the MTG and Boebert and Hawleys the future of the party? will the establishment be able to take back control? which side will murdoch end up on? will conservatives truly abandon fox news for oann, or will they make their way back into the fold? will establishment republicans face primary challenges from qanon? or will this whole thing fizzle out while the party goes back to the more socially acceptable psychopathy that they usually stick to? this is the thread where we watch the answers to these questions play out let's try to tease out which way the winds are blowing fox seems to be going back to the usual grievances about stupid bullshit. hannity hasn't mentioned trump recently, except to point out something about the fake russia hoax or something i dont really care. the important thing is that he seems to have gotten his orders to move on from trump https://twitter.com/seanhannity/status/1356011890699341831 fox and friends seems to be doing the same https://twitter.com/revrrlewis/status/1356225958789980164 on the politician side, public infighting among GOP politicians led to mccarthy telling them to stop attacking each other  i imagine that the impeachment trial is going to draw some battle lines. mcconnell et al probably want it to get over with as quickly as possible so that they can get to the work of memory-holing trump with the help of their media apparatus. but the true believers in our lord and savior dan trimap are likely going use it as an opportunity to grandstand and endear themselves to the chuds. even non believers in our lord and savoir dintorno tinted may do the same out of fear of being primaried tumrp tano UYNO
