Thread Concept - Post music and other inspirational material that you use in your games. Audio, music videos, and suchlike is great. - Discuss musics or request musics if you like for specific things. - Add resources for people to get music (that are not pirating) - If you have original compositions or audio pieces, go ahead and post them here if you're feeling saucy! Resources for Game Music - Basically everywhere but don't steal music please. - If you have a specific external resource that you'd like to include, put it in here. Picture of Two Blurry Dogs

I would be remiss not to mention one of the nerdiest power metal bands that I still listen to on a regular basis, which is Blind Guardian. Not only do they have an entire concept album about the Silmarillion, the majority of their songs are based around popular works of fiction, heroic myth, or historical epics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcRIGCmCoZA - From the album "A Night at the Opera" comes the 14 minute rock opera, Precious Jerusalem. I will maintain that the original recording was significantly better than the remaster, but the remaster is okay, I GUESS.

Aside from more generic power metal, there's also a lot of D&D inspired metal bands out there too. Mississippi Bones does a song that someone introduced me to a long time ago which, in addition to being extremely silly, also had the right kind of driving music to get me fired up for a good ol' fashioned dungeon crawl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcDpKBYbODM See also: a bunch of songs by The Sword, including that one song that got featured in Guitar Hero 1, Freya, which has a new recording from 2008 here (news to me!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJlxHAbYPl0

My basic rule is not to play anything with lyrics in it during the game. You can get away with it if you're at a physical table, where it's easy for everyone to focus on the words being spoken by the DM and players, rather than something in the background. But online, where everything is coming in through a pair of headphones? Nope. Roll20 lets you upload MP3s to the site's internal storage, and play them on the virtual tabletop. Unless you've got a paid subscription, this will rapidly exhaust your account's storage space. There's also a chance other users in the game won't hear them, due to connection issues or other problems with the site. There are several discord music bots that will join a call and play songs in response to commands. These have to be brought into a server, configured and given the appropriate roles and permissions. They can stop working randomly, due to an ongoing cold war that I don't really understand between discord and the people who develop discord bots. Platforms like Synchtube let you stream videos from Youtube so that other people can watch. You just keep it open in a tab in the background of your web browser. I haven't used this option for my own games, but I know people who swear by it. All of these options let each user customize the volume that the music plays on their machine - by opening their roll20 settings and adjusting the music volume, by turning down the bot's incoming audio in the discord call, or by adjusting the volume on the youtube video. This is important because every person has their own audio setup, and it's impossible for the DM to tell whether a track will be "too loud" for any given user. Whatever solution you choose for music in an online game, expect it to break at least some of the time. Test it beforehand, have a plan to troubleshoot it, but be prepared to abandon and move forward without it. Missing out on a cool backing track you meticulously chose is bad, spending 20 minutes on tech support in the middle of a game is worse. I have a massive list of tracks I like to use, but that will have to be its own post.

https://hedgewizard.bandcamp.com/album/more-true-than-time-thought This album's some excellent roleplaying game vibes, and is a lot less ambient than a lot of dungeon synth stuff. Definitely worth checking out.

Is it cool to post playlists? I've got a ton of rpg game playlists but if it's better to just post individual songs from them I'll do that.

Awesome masterpost! I'll give it a go next time I'm running some plain ol' un-themed fantasy.
