I know I should just be doing my own research, but how many of the vTubers out there are using Live2D? I kind of wanted to try it on my own and make a live 2d model, but I don't draw in the anime style (I for some weird reason am very bad at it,) but still wanted to create my own thing. Are there limitations? I see some vTubers are able to turn their head and blink and stuff is all the Live2D? Are expressions controlled with a separate dashboard, or does it track the face? I kind of wanted to set something up. I just think it'd be fun to be a vTube girl for awhile tbh, like there are tiktok filters and stuff that help so much with Dysphoria so the idea of doing a twitch stream or a lets play while making myself look the gender I am feels like it would be amazing.

VTube Studio appears to be the most popular solution for Live2D avatars. It does the tracking and has some triggers for different animations/expressions. Blinking can be done automatically or set to use eye tracking; I hear this is best used with certain iOS devices due to some advanced camera tech. Essentially the tracking maps the webcam input to various parameter sliders in the Live2D which will then morph things like mouth shape, head rotation, etc. As far as Live2D limitations, it really depends on the amount of work the rigger and artist put into it. Some riggers are very good at creating an illusion of 3D with Live2D, while others end up looking quite flat. The Live2D software itself has a free trial (40 or so days, I think?) that appears to be fully featured. It's a little complex though so with the learning curve, I imagine you'll likely end up having to pay for the real deal if you want to make your own avatar yourself. But if you obtain the model elsewhere, such as commission, you don't need to pay for Live2D yourself. If you're curious, VTube Studio is available for free on Steam/PC with all features for webcam tracking available out of the box (payment is only required to remove the watermark). It even has some sample avatars to use. There are also 3D solutions, but I don't have as much info on those as I'd like cause I've been more interested in the Live2D side of things.

Wanted to touch on this real quick, don't feel like you HAVE to be anime. There's def an interest in western style vtuber designs (see Cimrai) or 'non-standard' characters in general.

I just think it'd be fun to be a vTube girl for awhile tbh, like there are tiktok filters and stuff that help so much with Dysphoria so the idea of doing a twitch stream or a lets play while making myself look the gender I am feels like it would be amazing. I don't have hard numbers but I see a lot more L2D avatars. I think it's easier to nail down the exact style you want with L2D, since a Live2D avatar comes out exactly how it's drawn, compared to 3D where you need to either go hunting for textures and assets or make/model your own. It's really something where someone can give form to their creativity, even if they want to come out with something really unusual. The anime style is definitely dominant among Vtubers, but there's plenty of successful non-anime Vtubers. I don't think there's any kind of stigma against it, it's just that Vtubing has strong anime origins and there's a lot of anime fans getting into it. The basic way Live2D works is that you create parameters and link different movements or deformations to various changes in those parameters. Then you use a face-tracking software that reads your facial movements and converts them to parameter values. Then you just connect the former to the latter. For example, I create a parameter called MouthOpen, set a keyframe at value 0, then drag the avatar's top and bottom lips together so the mouth is closed. Then I set a second keyframe on MouthOpen value 1, and use a deformer to move the lips apart so that the mouth is open. That sets the avatar up so that the mouth will be fully closed when MouthOpen is 0, and the mouth will be fully open when MouthOpen is 1. Live2D takes care of tweening all the in-between values, so the mouth will be half-open at 0.5. Then I load that avatar into a face-tracker that sets OpenMouth to 1 when my mouth is fully open, and connect the tracker's OpenMouth value to the avatar's MouthOpen value. Head movements, eye movements, and so on all basically follow the same principle. So these basic movements are all handled by the face-tracking. Face-trackers are usually limited in what they can handle, so Live2D also allows setting up expressions and animations: predefined parameter sets that can override the tracking and force certain parameters to certain values. Then you can trigger them in response to hotkeys or events. For example, VTubeStudio's tracker handles smiling well but doesn't really do frowning. So if you want to smile, you just give the camera a big smile and the tracker will give your avatar a nice big MouthForm value. But if you wanted to have an angry face, you'd use Live2D to generate an expression file with MouthForm set to the proper value for a frowny face, and then bind that expression to a hotkey in VTS. Hit the hotkey, and VTS will override the tracker's MouthForm value (along with anything else you put in the expression, such as angry eyes) and give you a frown until you hit the hotkey again. You can also use this same principle to create predefined animations, which take over tracking params temporarily to play out a preset series of parameter changes. If you want to mess around with Vtuber tracking and see how it feels, I find Kalidoface's Live2D and VRoid trackers are really nice for seeing how it works since they run right in the browser. All you need to do is visit the link, turn on the webcam, and choose one of the sample avatars. I don't know that I'd use Kalidoface for actual streaming, but you don't have to download anything to try it out.

So here's a very specific request: Besides Ange, Watame and the rest of the hololive gang are there any V-tubers, Japanese or otherwise, that played and really enjoyed Undertale/Deltarune? Seeing people connecting with the themes of those games is just really great.
