Hi all, I have no business starting this thread, but here we are. I am currently reading "The Map that Changed the World" and I realized just how much fun I had as a kid looking for fossils at the beach. I figured this forum could use a thread where people share what they found, where, how, ... . Fossil name: Belemnite rostrum ("Donnerkeil" in German) Location: north coast of Germany, probably around Rügen How: Literally like looking for shells on a beach, these are very abundant I left Germany for SoCal a long time ago, and I am suddenly super interested in checking out the Trilobite wilderness to look for fossils there. Post your stories/finds!

Ooh, fossil hunting! I recently learned about the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in the UK. It's on our list of places to go over the next few years.

I grew up in southern Indiana with two geologist parents and rock hound grandparents. We went to road cuts sometimes, not as scenic with traffic around but easy access to a full cross section. Otherwise creek beds and lake (reservoir) shores where erosion pulls out some new stuff at a reasonable pace. Mostly segments of crinoids, like sometimes enough you could make a necklace. Occasional trylobytes were highly prized treasures. I can't recall other names, there was a thing that looks like a Quaker oat square. Its been a long time. That was fun

I've had a small but strong interest in fossils my whole life... When I have time later I'll post some highlights from my bins of horned coral and brachiopods (god I miss living by Hueston Woods!) but recently found something in some otherwise-unremarkable gravel that has stumped me: I figure it's some kind of sponge but can anybody offer info beyond that? (I'm not good with stuff outside the Devonian lol) E: Ok, evidently these are some sort of tabulate coral fossils... Very cool!
