Out tomorrow, motherfuckers! Every review I’ve seen has been insanely positive. Book owns and Barry Jenkins is one of the best contemporary directors. Unbelievably excited for this one

caught a screener of the first two episodes, it's alright. It seems to be moving really fast, and the first episode is WAY too stylized for my tastes (jesus christ the crane shots). the twin peaks comparison the nyt review makes was hyperbole as I feared, it's more og twin peaks than the return--- the episodes are slathered in Nicholas Britell's wonderful score, which kinda robs the remaining haunting qualities from the rather insistent sound design. I wished we got a better and less broad depiction of the plantation, some more of the community there and the dynamics. When the main character finally gets on the train the show rockets into full blown scifi, and stays there in the second episode, which I found much stronger in pacing and command (the crane shots return but actually work and feel like good storytelling). I hope it keeps the energy and vision of the second episode going, while also developing the protagonist more. Much of the second episode is talking directly past the protagonist and into the audience, which hopefully will fall off as the protagonist grows into strength.

on a technical note, i hope that there's a 4k stream available when it drops, cuz the 1080p bitrate compression crushes the colors... jenkins and his dp deserve better

Three episodes in and this show is extremely good. It looks and sounds amazing. I very rarely notice sound in TV shows but I actually ended up finding headphones for this because it’s that good

Three episodes in and this show is very good. Looks incredible, and the performances are fantastic, especially the lead woman who is phenomenal. She's sure to become a big star. The slave-catcher's kid partner might be the coolest human alive, which might be a problem as it makes me really want to root for him.

I'm not sure what I think about the whole alt-reality magical realism thing though. I don't know a huge amount about slavery in the American south, so I'm often not entirely sure what is true and what isn't. Obviously I know the railway wasn't a literal railway, but for instance I had to look up whether North Carolina ever did completely outlaw black people (AFAICT they didn't). I wonder if people who know even less about this than I do will see this show and come to the conclusion that a great deal of it is fantasy, including the brutality of slavery that is shown. Well, I'm enjoying it at any rate.

My prediction: Caesar is from the future.

fwiw all the areas they visit are meant to be metaphors for the treatment of black people in various eras of post-civil war american history

This show really should have been released weekly. It dropping all at once did it such a disservice.

I just started watching this recently and think it's one of the best shows I've seen this year. shame it doesn't seem to be more popular

yeah, it's definitely not a binge-watch show for me

I've never seen Barry Jenkins' other work, so will be checking it out soon
