There's a shitload of animes where they just flat out play sports. One of the original big ones, Aim for the Ace, is about tennis. (and Gunbuster is basically Aim for the Ace with giant robots instead of tennis) There's even one where they play American football, Eyeshield 21. The heroes' team are called the Devil Bats.
