How's it hanging, brah?
Problem description: Old external hard drive reports bad sectors. Got a new, larger, external hard drive I want to transfer the files to.

Attempted fixes: Just straight copy and pasting from one drive to the other would stop at a certain point. Downloaded AOMEI Backupper Standard, EaseUS Disk Copy, and looked at some other options but the actual cloning functions aren’t available in the free versions of the software I found. Not keen on running chkdsk since it will take a long time and I fear it will just create more problems than it would solve.

Yeah, don't run chkdsk. That could damage the HDD more.

There are a lot of free open source ones out there: https://www.tecmint.com/linux-disk-cloning-tools/
