Crafting can be expensive to level if you're doing it quickly, and is definitely a bit time consuming, and it's not a guarantee of instant riches. But it is a path to steady income if you're willing to find crafting niches to fill, or to put in extra work at patch drops when gear and raid buff items are in demand. I've made millions over time selling level 50/60/70/80 accessories and gear, or making and listing season-appropriate glam items, or seeing what gear is needed to complete the Fashion Report and listing the suggested dyes and items. And that's just to name a few ways to go about it.

I'd actually advise someone new to pick up Botanist or Miner, or both. Gathering's reasonably quick to level in comparison to crafting, and even at lower levels some of the stuff you gather sells on the marketboard for reasonable amounts. You can also set a retainer to have a gatherer as their job, and send them off to get you bunches of specific things that you can then immediately resell. I've been selling stacks of produce that are useful for raid food and collectables, and business has been steady.

Yeah, I would absolutely recommend leveling botanist and miner if you're remotely interested in crafting. If nothing else, being able to gather your own materials and send out retainers for them will dramatically reduce the cost/increase the profitability of crafting. Gathering raw mats, crafting intermediate mats with them, and selling those on the MB is also a pretty easy way to make some money -- not optimal profits compared to timing the market for high-value stuff, but intermediates sell consistently and can be produced as you level. I've made a decent income just gathering more stuff than I need for my crafting projects and selling extras.

crafting is a massive money sink where at the end of the sink you're allowed to make money, maybe, if you feel like grinding out a bunch of gear crafts right when an even-numbered patch drops and micromanage your sales to ensure they sell at reasonable prices

That's only if your standard is guaranteed 8 digit profits in a week. Outside of patch weeks you can make gil without even touching anything involving real end game gear, it just requires you to do research and diversify. Whether that's worth the effort depends on if you find the process fun, I spend a significant amount of my time just crafting and playing the market, just hit gil cap this last patch after playing on and off from all the way back during 2.1

I would probably delete the "not mandatory" on the "+!" quests, some of them actually are mandatory to progress the msq. I'm doing 2.x right now and I had to fight some primals and do the crystal tower raids to unblock the msq

yeah there's exactly two mandatory + quests, which the game will tell you to do at some point, in a sea of optional ones. I think the infographic is probably fine

There is an exception: any quest called "Leves of [location]" just unlocks repeatable sidequests that are only really useful for leveling gatherers and crafters. You can probably ignore them.

The rest, however, are definitely worth looking at. For example you don't NEED the challenge log (blue + quest in Limsa after getting the MSQ quest to sail around everywhere and say hello) but it's useful chunks of xp and other resources for doing stuff you're doing anyway.

You should unlock all of the blue + quest optional content because it is all good stuff and an incredible amount of story and lore is hidden behind those unlocks

Leves were intended as one of the primary content pillars in 1.0. Anyone who's done leves should not be surprised 1.0 crashed and burned.

Edit: And just to prevent you poopsocking rascals from levelling too quickly, you're only allowed a few leves per day.

Do levelling roulette, alliance roulette when it becomes available, every day. As a tank running dungeons is probably faster, since you'll get instant queues.

ALIVE ENOUGH TO DIE
Job quests are blue quest markers and are absolutely mandatory for at least level 1-60 as job/class actions are gated behind those quests. I just started Stormblood so I have no idea if this trend continues past this point.

Job quests stop existing after Stormblood. They're replaced with role quests of which one line is mandatory in ShB but totally optional in EW.

Most stormblood job quests do not give abilities but I believe the level 70 quest does so you’ll have to do them anyway.

SettingSun posted:

Every job has a single level 80 job quest in shadowbringers (except reaper and sage, which have a full set of quests 70-80) but there’s no skills learned from them or anything like that.

You’re right, Reaper gets a skill at level 80 too. Forgot about both of those. They’re the exceptions since their main questline ends at 80

it will probably continue that way as we go. Whatever classes we get in the next expansion will probably have an 80-90 questline with a skill at 90.

Also, wrt new thread, I'll start trying to work on it soon, might as well. I didn't realize it was quite that recent, people are just really chatty about this game, for good reason.

E: oh cool! Thanks for making it. A thread reborn.

If there's a normal quest marker but the quest has a banner graphic, it's probably a cool side-story quest chain.
