Is it possible to take the smallest rubicks cube [2x2x2] and mix it up so that no side has more than one of any color square? I was messing around with mine and couldn't make it happen but that's hardly proof.

Yep. From a solved cube, rotate the right face clockwise once, the front face clockwise twice, then the top face clockwise once.
