Hello and welcome to the ADTRW Japanese Pro Wrestling thread! I think that you guys would appreciate pro wrestling here, as it is very similar to shonen. But enough of that, let's get started:

MAJOR COMPANIES

MEN (in japan, usually women and men's wrestling is segregated by company, so a men's only promotion would not have women and vice versa. This distinction goes back over 50 years and isn't changing any time soon.)

New Japan Pro Wrestling

The big dog of wrestling. Largest fanbase and most recognizable brand in Japan. Famous for its excellent in ring wrestling and attractive men, New Japan is popular in the west as well because of its english language commentary and easy to use streaming service.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyu3ER9i9c4

Dragon Gate
The second biggest company in Japan. Its style is called lucharesu, a hybrid blend of Mexican lucha libre and Japanese pro wrestling. This promotion has a large fujo audience because of the undeniable appeal of hunky bois doing flips. Dragon Gate also has a streaming service and English language commentary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5W8tyh3CHA

DDT
Weird poo poo. The world's largest comedy wrestling promotion. If you've ever seen a gif of a wrestler wrestling a child or a blow up doll, this is where it's from. Secretly filled to the brim with amazing wrestlers, though. streaming service

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LApVz53Spw

Pro Wrestling NOAH
Very traditional strike based pro wrestling. If you want to watch shonen fighting spirit exchanges and speeches about who should be the protagonist of the company, this one is for you! Noah has English language commentary and a streaming service. Actually owned by the same company that owns DDT. Go figure!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXvzh9y3oz8

WOMEN'S

Stardom
Wrestling based idolish promotion. That's right, this promotion is full of idols! You love those! Apart from singing and dancing, the Stardom girls are also kick rear end wrestlers! Great stuff here, but very serious. Stardom has a streaming service and English language commentary (sometimes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K_oOvMytCo

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling
Very idolish promotion. Basically an IRL version of an Idolm@ster squad with fake fighting. This promotion is more reliant on storylines than Stardom is, but they're not that hard to understand. If you can get the gist of a manga from raws, you can understand TJPW. streaming service

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O15X-tr5wk

There are of course many more companies running in Japan at the moment, but this is a general overview of the most popular.

Thank you for reading my thread! Below are some helpful links if you want to get more into Japanese pro wrestling!

Yeah this is definitely the go to option as it offers a great variety of shows and styles. Also everyone should be watching TJPW because it's awesome.

Crow showed me Kenoh from Noah and I'm pretty sold on Noah as a whole now. Unfortunately I only caught half of the Wrestle Kingdom show last night, but I'll try to watch the rest of it some other time.

#2 is probably hard to qualify right now as no company is able to draw well given attendance caps and clap crowds. But I think Dragon's gate does draw better than DDT outside of Tokyo but NOAH has rebounded and DDT is doing well. Plus Stardom is as well so the actual #2 is pretty wide open

It's not a hootenanny, it's an extravsganza!
DDT, TJPW, and NOAH also put up a full match once a week, nearly always from each promotion's bigger, monthly shows. Although sometimes they're from about a year ago. One of TJPW's most recent matches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8Pr7dfYwKw is the Hyper Misao vs "Big Kaiju" Shoko Nakajima bullrope, gachapon golden ticket match from the first show last year .

I have memories of watching wrestling from Japan during the Christmas-and-Newyears vacation in the 90s - I think it might've been AJPW that was broadcast here, but it was a local station that also did weird things like Insomniac with Dave Attell a few years later, and I'm not sure they had the rights for any of what they broadcast.

All the same, I remember it very fondly.

if you want that style of wrestling, both current NOAH and new japan are heavily indebted to 90s AJPW

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch
A good thing to watch if you are interested in Stardom is their weekly TV show - every episode is half an hour long and it features one or two usually edited matches on it; and its a good taster to see if its something you like the look of before you go out to spend money on the streaming service. Link is here. They also live streamed a show last week (here) - its not a big show with the matches mainly being a lot of multi-man tag matches but the main event featured Giulia, one of the top stars of the promotion, leader of the Donna Del Mundo faction who has recently returned from injury, teaming with a pair of debuting mystery partners who'd been randomly showing up to bully the Stardom rookies over the last few months.

Their service is different to New Japan World or Wrestle Universe in that they don't have any live shows on there; everything is uploaded after the fact, generally a match at a time. Their major arena shows (monthly usually) are aired on PPV for a lot of money but they end up on Stardom World within four or five days so you wouldn't be waiting for months to see something.

The promotion is based around a lot of factions with every wrestler being a member of one and there's probably a group that fits for everyone. Could go into more detail if people are interested into the roster and how its split up; bit too long for a post like this.

I am the sexiest poster in the world!
The general consensus among western wrestling critics is that NJPW has the best wrestling matches. Some of that may be due to not a lot of the stuff from smaller promotions making it overseas or generating much buzz, but NJPW also has a trend of getting insanely good wrestlers (Okada is the obvious example there).

If you just want to see some fun wrestling shows though, that DDT/TJPW/NOAH combo pack seems like a solid way to go.
