The actual tax rate isn't terribly far off from that number though. Punching 750k into a tax calculator, it looks like between federal, California, and Social Security/Medicare taxes, he's paying $336k on 750k: 44.82%.

Also Beckham was paid 15 million dollars by the browns in 2021, so any tax bracket but the highest isn't super relevant when talking about his income from the Rams.

top marginal rates with california taxes for 1099 contractors is going to be close to 50%. most tv people and athletes are paying the top marginal rates for everything because the vast majority of their money is in the top marginal bracket. as posted above, beckham hit that bracket long before he earned dollar one from the rams. this is also why most of them skew republican, because they're the only people talking about taxing them in particular at a lower rate and no one should ever be surprised if any actor, athlete, or other celebrity has long since drank the right's kool aid because they are legitimately paying a high tax rate. in a progressive system that treated all income as income and didn't give corporation incentive to designate everyone as a contractor, the 'celebrity' tax bracket would have an effective rate closer to 33% or lower rather than 43-50% or so. instead we have a system where their employer is allowed to dump a shitload of taxes they should rightly pay onto the laborer all the while saying "it's the government's fault."

OperaMouse posted:This guy doesn't understand how tax brackets work. he's already made enough money this year that any income from the Rams deal is going to be taxed at the top marginal rate but yeah the guy probably does not understand tax brackets, he just lucked in to the right answer
