i realized while driving around today that despite being probably my second favorite band of all time, ever, i definitely have not listened to even half of the extant songs by European space/goth/psyche band The Legendary Pink Dots, who have existed since like 1979 or some crazy poo poo, and whom have put out roughly six hundred albums (which is actualy barely an exagerraton, i think they have over 200 counting compilations, definitely over 100) anyway the point is, i'm gonna find out. maybe! or die trying. thats morbid. and, maybe, we'll all learn something. (we wont) i'm just gonna do it in random order. but im gonna try to average at least 2 songs a day otherwise we'll be here forever "Zero Zero" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ApCfuVAX3g even tho i started listening to the PD in high school, i very much associate them with my best (dead) friend whom i met when i was 21. this was one of his fave songs by them. i'm sure i'll mention him a lot in this thread. anyway, it is also one of my fave of theirs songs, despite not really being a banger or anything. i normally don't like these quiet songs where Ed just talks about stuff as much as all that but this one, i dunno, the lyrics are very quite good. unlike my posting. theres not much else to say, the melody by Niels von Hornblower is very goodd though. "I Love You In Your Tragic Beauty" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwU27t2DHcw this is the first song that came up on youtube when i searched the band name, and thats fair. it is almost certainly their single most well known song, just because its very distinctive and moody and has some of Ed's best lyrics. and that fingerpicked guitar stuff, its just aces. funny because they are mostly an electronic band, they always have to hire guitar players and they have gone through a lot of them. the guitar reminds me of In Gowan Ring, and of rennaissance festivals in general its just a great tune

"Green Gang" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ZSNr4bLVk the live version of this (linked above from Live at the Fillmore, 1998) just slays. another favorite song of the NOR-I, that is to say Ososirius; my dead best friend. i think that in general one of the frustrating things about the Pink Dots is that they rarely "go hard" but when they do, the results are so obviouslyl theyre best songs, that you wonder "why don't you just do that all the time, or at least more often" you only really get one "Green Gang" per album. its unclear what Ed is talking about here. probably simething to do with Celtic imagery, ie the Green-Man, ie Verde Atua 8/10

and now for something completely different: their newest song. i actually have barely listened to any of their albums post-2008, because i'm lazy and a bad fan i guess anyway so this is a song i haven't heard before, "This is the Museum" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10qERIy4qRM it's... very good! extremely reminiscent of their best stuff while not feeling like a rehash. groovy and spooky and makes me want to dance le danse macabre with some goth lady or lord with a ton of eyeliner and experience le petite morte  7/10 deffo gonna spin this whole album later. i guess it just came out. dope.

"Damien" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhlL6xtVyk4 i literally searched "random Legendary Pink Dots song" haha. this one is off From Here You'll Watch The World Go By, one of their best records this song follows a now familiar template; an ominous groove that eventually glistens with guitar and horn solos. when you see them live, niels von hornblower usually has on some kind of insane shiny suit, and he really earns his keep here, as does the guitar player (same one they toured with a lot during this era)

missed a couple days, so i better get going. i need to do like ten total today so let's get crackin "The Death of Jack the Ripper" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wngi5sg8dqY spooky, wonky, off key and off kilter. deffo falls more on the experimental/industrial side, which is a sound they have tended to utilize less and less as years go on. by the 2000s they had pretty much stopped doing these kind of songs altogether, which is a shame, because they did some good spookshows. this one is a rel banger "Our Lady in Chambers" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhpSE9quuSA so i'm not even entirely sure i knew this album existed, let alone this song. says it's from 1986, so it's strange that i haven't heard it. maybe it was hard to get. anyway, this song is dope! sounds like it's from the 90s, not their 80s sound, in a good way. really layered and pro sounding, orchestral even. the strings that come in halfway through are phenom

Definitely prefer their older stuff, as well as their albums with Niels Van Hornblower. I don't really care so much for most of their post 2000 stuff; some of it's OK. "Sensory Deprivation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQQBCzYI0eA Prayer For Aradia is their first album, and it deffo sounds like it. this song is actually quite catchy though, even if it does sound like "german high school music class attempts to figure out how a wah wah pedal works". clever lyrics, less serious and more playful than Ed would later become (though, to b honest, the "Seriousness" of Ed is overrated) "Soft Toy" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqLSDP8pKv0 this is a true story. i know people always say that even, perrhaps especially, wwn the story ISN"T true, but this one for real is 1000% true. i am not gonna embellish or exaggerate even a little bit so in 2005 or 2006, the PD were playing in Atlanta. i believe it was their 25th Anniversary Tour, and it was in a very small and intimatee venue. i tink it was called The Wolf Room or something. it was downtown and i have never seen another band there or since, and i have seen an rear end load of shows in Atlanta. i'm very surprised the show wasn't at the Masquerade. this place was WAY smaller. seriouslyl it only had about 100 people in it, and it was almost full so when me and my friend NOR-I show up, Niels von Hornblower is sitting on the steps outside, and he gives us a very cool "sup", like "yeah, you guys have seen this poo poo bfore", and we, you know, to be "cool", we just gave him the nod and walked on past into the venue. cool as ice you understand anyway so about 45 mins into the show, i'm up front. there isn't exactly a "stage". there's a break and people start going "WOOOOOO" and yelling song requests, as one does. i was very drunk. i yelled "SOFT TOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ed looked over at me, and i thought he looked annoyed, like "ok go drunk, you're home buddy" but then they started playing "Soft Toy". not because i had requested it. it was literally just the next song they had planned on playing. lmao. and it's deffo not one of their "known songs", like, at all. it's just a good rear end song off what was at the time one of their most recent albums, The Whispering Wall, which is also one of my favorites of theirs. as has been stated, ther post-2000 output tends to vary in qulity more than their older stuff, but this album is a stone killer.
