So someone suggested in current events a GIP music thread, the conversation being brought about by people not knowing “Big Yellow Taxi” was written by Joni Mitchell. This will not do.

So this thread is for you to post music that people should know about, either because it’s really good, or because it’s from a little bit left field and people may not have heard of them.

I’m going to say maybe contribute up to 5 songs and make it that none of them are by the same artist, so we don’t get to click your 5 all time Toad the Wet Sprocket songs. Also try and put a bit of an introduction or explanation to your picks.

Firstly one of the UKs current best poets/rappers. This is a live version and it sounds exactly like the record and I have no idea how they manage to remember all the words! This comes from a live session recorded for BBC 6 music, which if you like alternative radio is an absolutely belter pick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O01RCqa8Wuk

Another cracking song from someone taken, once again, too early. God drat you alcohol. This video makes this song doubly poignant which is saying something.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yw8O2mdrxs

Ethel Cain. I have no idea what to say about her here, she kind of switches identities and I’m too old and not one of the kids anymore to keep up other than to say I love everything she has ever put out and this one is an utterly gorgeous slice of trailer trash loveliness. She needs to get an album out ASAP and a UK tour would be appreciated, please and thank you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu-t3tqDyAY

One from another UK artist, Rebecca Lucy Taylor who used to be in the band Slow Dive and recently branched out to produce an utter masterpiece of an album, Prioritise Pleasure, which if you have ever been in a relationship which was a bit one-sided may hit home rather hard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mtd_jlV61mA

Finally Mogwai, just to show I can do loud. They have been out for years, this is their latest single, and this is my go to driving or doing stuff music, where I don’t have to do anything but let it wash over me. They are also one of the loudest bands you will ever hear live!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZf9svkQRZM

So that’s it. I could put 50 songs on here but no one would click them, so go for it, edumacate us.

But seriously, give 6 Music a listen.

I like the idea of this thread, this forum has led me to some bands that I really like that I had no idea about, like Gangstagrass. I am that guy that is perpetually stuck in the 90's so I won't bother you with what Alice in Chains song I am stuck on at the moment (It's Would, it's always Would. Unless I am in a mood then it is Nutshell). Also trying to learn the acoustic version of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.

Here is the Gangstagrass song that got me hooked:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUKDYHWAKnY
I guess they also did the opening theme song for Justified as well.

The new video for Rammstein, Angst, is really good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONj9cvHCado
Looks like it's about the refugee crisis in Europe I assume? Angst is German for fear I believe. Crazy that Rammstein is still around and kicking out bangers like this. I remember listening to them in high school lol.

I also just learned about Ghost:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD2m_iqD7dI
Which is weird because I recognized some of their other songs but never knew who they were. I think they are Swedish?

Other than that I listen to a lot of video game music, think Nobuo Uematsu or Hitoshi Sakimoto. Final Fantasy composers among other Square-Enix games. Definitely recommend Vagrant Story (PS1), I played it when I was a teenager and I can still hum most of the soundtrack. Also check out Shadow of the Colossus by Kow Otani. If you like electronic/house music Yuzo Kashiro's Streets of Rage (1-4) soundtracks are amazing.

Devil May Cry 5's Devil Trigger is going on my Gym playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpnPSChVRQ
Alright I will shut up about video game music unless someone engages me.

There's a lot of crappy and derivative synthwave out there but there are some acts who do just a fan-loving-TASTIC job of making their music convey a certain emotion or intensity. You posted Carpenter Brut, which is awesome, and his new album Leather Terror just dropped. This features a two-part song (Day Stalker/Night Prowler) which is quite possibly one of the hardest songs he's ever done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luctm7knRx0 (maybe NWS for 80s horror movie gore, etc)

If this doesn't make you want to sprint a mile as fast as you can or do whatever it is you're doing with about 9,000% more intensity, check yourself for a pulse.

Also really good is Peturbator:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B7-Vcdlld8

Dance with the Dead has a ton of great tracks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMm1rP-m_YM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMm1rP-m_YM

And this track by Gunship loving shreds because they got Tim Cappello to do what he does best: be totally jacked and absolutely go insane with the sax (NWS for gore, etc)

I tend to like mellow, calming music with a story. Most of you will be bored to tears. Not really plugging anything I haven't before.

Benjamin Tod. Also leads the Lost Dog Street Band, which is pretty much bluegrass and century old country. His solo work is mostly solemn, self deprecation, and real depth of the Kentucky soul. An offshoot of folk and bluegrass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsDMVX0_4pM

Gregory Alan Isakov. Folk as gently caress. The Red Rocks Colorado Symphony album is amazing, and Amsterdam is one of his more popular songs, so it's a good primer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd4MiOrDupE

Anderson East. Kinda funky, bluesy, featuring a flute solo. He also writes sad songs, but has tends to have a faster tempo and brass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u97t4FxigjQ

Jason Isbell and Elizabeth Cook playing Townes van Zandt.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP-XcB1qFr8

And since Joni Mitchell is what started this, here she is on a James Taylor track. Love James Taylor. More than likely you've all heard this song somewhere in some form or another, usually without Joni.

Foo Fighters opening RFK on their 20th anniversary with Everlong was very cool. Taylor Hawkins dying sucked a lot. It kicked off a lot of bad things that I'm working through. Gary Clark, Jr has helped with that a bit. I think HandsomeRalph was there as well. (I'm rewatching it now because I had a bad day, I wish I could convey to you all badass it was live) [Again, I have been blasting this for the last two hours and I've had a day, they collectively blew the lid off the place that night.]

Minus the Bear is my other favorite. They also broke up a couple of years back. I've seen them five times live.
