i was looking at Spotify a few months ago and noticed that one of my favorite bands has almost no listeners at all, which explained why i had only discovered them randomly and never heard anyone else talk about them. but then i noticed that a lot of some of the best bands i listen to, most of which are even currently active, have so few listeners i would think they're some "local band" but they're not! none of them are! they're all real bands!

Cosmonauts 6,095 monthly listeners - psyche/stoner/rock - "Shaker" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcJtRdhX-cA this was the second band that inspired this thread. i was assuming they had at least as many listeners as something like The Black Angels, but they're nowhere even remotely close to that.

Kids on a Crime Spree - 6,452 monthly listeners - psyche rock - "How Com You're Such a Liar, Steve?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVYh_X9uxjk

this was the band that inspired the thread. not only does nobody listen to them, but they suddenly put a new album out THIS YEAR after having not done anything since 2010. i like to think that me listening to them at least 2 times a day is what inspired them to come back. i'm serious when i say they're my favorite current band. they're so fuckin good. so good i'm gonna post a second song

I submit The Frost, a 1960s/70s psychedelic rock band that seemed like it should have been a lot more famous than it ended up being. Only 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm4byxG9uaw

Also two newer rock bands that have very few listeners but sound really good:
Riot Course - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioAwdj7wPY8
V*A*S*E - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZMPgVG4BRY

(and can't post for 14 days!)

i like that this happens. it's the second main feature of spotify for me. if i go looking for music, i'm going to get recommended certain things that already have a big audience. on spotify i can just be skipping through algorithmically generated playlists and end up with 3 new bands i like in one night, and then it turns out 2 of them barely qualify as famous at all.

you've got people making music alone in their houses presented right alongside established classics and megabands like they're all on the same level and it ends up feeling like they basically are. it's all just music take your pick.

the only major downside is that most of the music i get recommended tends to be within the same genre. i listen to a lot of female vocalist rock music, and some of that is because i've always liked that, but most of it is now because that's 75% of what spotify gives me. there's a lot of variety within that but i'm going to have to train this thing to show me some male led bands at some point because it's getting weird.

it evens makes me want to get myself together and put music on there at some point because in the past i've been very ah well who is gonna listen to it anyway, it's good enough as it is just for me. but y'know people might actually end up finding it and enjoying it on this large a scale with this much randomness so it's cool.

i mean, they are certainly a pop band, but they are also just as much a fuzzy shoegaze-twee band. hell they're on Slumberland records dude lmao

Chill Rob G. - hip hop - 6,342 monthly listeners

"bad dreams" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7bG_m67gVo

okay now this one is legitimately baffling and a travesty. Chill Rob G's one and only album is one of the best and most foundational hip hop albums of all time. 6k monthly listeners is literally nothing. i can't figure this one out at all.

I've been a fan of him for about 15 years, his tour for 'unholy' is in my top 5 shows of all time, and I don't understand how he's not more well known.
Had some terrible luck with record labels and got hosed over by the industry more than most. His first 2 albums aren't on Spotify but can be found on YouTube.

https://open.spotify.com/album/21Igi7lQCeuKzMPQ7EWta6?si=RyUCQiZ4SL2nxJvu21H-cA&utm_source=copy-link

The best song off his second album, the only link on the entire internet where it can be listened to, has 7700 plays after 13 years. It's big, dramatic and has a hell of a payoff.

I was going to suggest Grant MacDonald, the singer of Ram Ranch, but I looked it up. Amazingly, he has 160k monthly listeners. Spotify helpfully lists his latest single "Buttfuckin Prince Harry". So I'm sorry, the obscure band you like is less admired than a guy who keeps singing about cowboy penises.
