P. T. Barnum was genuinely really clever, a lot of his stunts required a level of setup that neither Trump nor Musk are actually capable of. Instead, they have money to insulate themselves from their many, many blunders. Not hard to seem smart if failure has no real consequence and you can just claim you succeeded.
