Actually the first two books of ASOIAF are tight political thriller based in a well-defined fantasy world but by the fourth book he had already written himself into a corner with too many characters and subplots. Not to mention most of the good characters have been killed off by then so he just dicks around with a bunch of new people no one gives a gently caress about.
