A body-wracking series of painful muscle spasms so bad you have to take 10mg lorazepam sublingually, and then the pain stops, and you don’t exactly feel sleepy but you realize you could go to sleep right then so like, why not? Wake up 8 or so hours later. Not encouraging it.

When I was an annoying teenager, I used to put on No Quarter by Zeppelin on my headphones when getting into bed, it seemed to work. Later, when I had my first apartment, it was episodes of Sagan's Cosmos on the TV, and I'd be lights out half an episode in. Certainly it was the Vangelis soundtrack, but the warm colour palette (especially in the 'lives of stars' episode) drenching the room helped too. Also Carl's soothing voice. These days it's too much beer, or melatonin.

For awhile I accidentally trained myself to fall asleep in my chair, before taking my work boots off, by watching Abom79 videos, I'd make it about 45 seconds past the intro, after he fired up the lathe or mill and then pass right out, nothing else has ever had this effect on me. For reference: I'd make it about 12 and 1/2 minutes into this video before passing out.

If I really need to get to sleep and it still eludes me, a couple CBD/melatonin gummies and Star Trek TNG will usually do the trick.
