when I was a kid we had a record album called Weather Company or Weather Factory, something like that. The concept was that people who work in a factory making the weather sing songs about it. It was bizarre in a 70's kind of way and it scared the crap out of me. Thanks, parents.

I think as a kid I reacted to how unearthly Dennis Yost's voice sounds. now of course I recognize it as a great vocal performance!

I also like Dusty Springfield's version:

We used to sing this every Sunday when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade. Looking back on it now, the song was supposed to be about how Jesus will take us all up into heaven like astronauts taking off from a launch pad. At the time, however, it was presented to us as the countdown to Nuclear Armageddon, which could happen at any time without warning, maybe even on the way home from church, and if you haven't prayed the sinner's prayer before it happens, you will burn in firey hell for eternity. There was a picture book with lyrics that went along with the song, and I swear one of the pages had a mushroom cloud with Jesus' face imposed over it. Thanks for the childhood trauma requiring years of therapy!

Drink-Mix Man

You are an odd fellow, but I must say... you throw a swell shindig.

I used to think "Maneater" by Hall and Oates was describing a literal monster that would come out at night and devour men. I pictured it like something out of the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" illustrations.

not scary as such but this radio show brings back awful, awful memories

https://www.mixcloud.com/noeltyrrel/sing-something-simple-programme-69-1962/

i remember as a child suffering terribly from depression, anxiety, and all sorts of crap, because i was a "sissy" or some such sophisticated diagnosis. i would have very dark times at night, desperately not wanting the next day to come as it would bring fresh horrors, and dreading the inevitability of dawn. i had a little transistor radio and i would tune it back and forth, trying to find a friendly voice or something. unfortunately, the hour would come when the only thing that i could pick up was Sing Something Simple. it's a horrifying sound to me, it speaks of the dread and terror and very very dark times.
