Japan's feeling particularly ecstatic over today's events, since they never quite got over the infamous "Agony of Doha" of 1993 (where they failed to qualify to the 94 cup in the final minutes, when Iraq scored the equalizer).

Even more cathartic, Moriyasu was part of that team and went on to admit that he was super goddamn nervous in the final minutes of today's game, fearing the past was going to repeat itself. Now JP twitter's going crazy with people cheering for the new "Miracle of Doha", almost three decades later

Croatia looked totally gassed in the second half vs Belgium. Japan probably have the better legs at this point

Yeah I listened to the Football Weekly recap, and in talking about Belgium-Croatia there was a joke that the Croatians finally look tired.

That was the worst world cup penalty shoot out ever. No power at all and super easy to guess. God I wouldn’t be so salty if it was a straight up 2-1 lost

I thought Japan’s PK was bad, Spain couldn’t even get 1 goal in. But the spainish goalie had a nice save whereas Gonda didn’t block any shots

One of the locally based English-language sportswriters here (for the local Japan Times) has a good thread translating what former Japan coach Takeshi Okada wrote in the aftermath of this tournament, making a lot of good points about what kind of player and development the Samurai Blue need to take the next step up and get over this last 16 wall.

https://twitter.com/aishiterutokyo/status/1600293329169657856

https://twitter.com/aishiterutokyo/status/1600301048718974976

This is just selections from the thread, but the focus is not just on getting players with international (European) experience, but also coaches who have that experience as players. The next step is not only to understand Japanese' players' strengths, but also have some more nous.

I also think part of that is having a cup manager with different strengths to a league manager, but that's not a struggle for Japan alone.

Japan had almost exclusively foreign managers from 1998 to 2018. Asking for one again is nothing new, unless he means a Japanese with foreign experience.

Spain did lose 0-3, but seeing the last player being all smug and fail is quite satisfying.

Doan’s PK was a nice one, but other players were left/right/left lol
