Yes, those are Gambian Pouched Rats, they are rodents, but not closely related to brown and black rats. They just look a lot like rats.

We started with two, then got one more when the first one's buddy died (beginner's mistake; now we're stuck), then got two more once the other old man died so we wouldn't have a solo lonely rat, then they lived out their lives happily, and now we've picked up four brothers and OH GOD SO MANY KISSES. :3:

When our last pet store rat was alone after the deaths of her aunties and her sister, we decided to adopt three babies from a shelter. This shelter kind of didn't know what they were doing. They had separated three individuals that a guy had brought in. He'd humanely captured them in his garage. White rats with red eyes, probably almost totally blind. Anyway, turns out it was a mom and her two daughters. Maybe mama was an escaped lab rat. The daughters were sweethearts from the beginning, but mama bit the gently caress out of our fingers. She wasn't exactly wild, but it was a bit dangerous just feeding and cleaning.

After a couple days, it was plainly apparent she was pregnant. So we had our old lonely rat in her own cage, the two daughters in another, and bitey mommy in her own. She gave birth to fifteen healthy babies, all of whom survived, and we found a rat rescue adoption program thing that was able to take in mama and all fifteen little ones.
