The real power behind countless overlords

I've already contacted steam support and all three games mentioned here and they were unable to help. I know this is a longshot, but maybe someone will have an idea of what else I can try or check. I will be thrilled if someone can point me towards the location of a log that could help narrow down the problem because so far I've just been trying the usual things and hoping it will work more or less at random.

Problem description: The issue started sometime in the last couple of months, Steam has started to refuse to start/launch some new games I purchased, seemingly at random. At first I thought it was the specific game I was trying, but earlier this month I saw the same issue on two games that I bought at the same time (Horizon Zero Dawn and I Was a Teenage Exocolonist). I've now seen it on over half-a-dozen games so it seems unlikely to be game specific. It may be something all the games have in common though? Going Medieval, a game I have 100 hours play time in and have kept installed since first playing it, also shows the same symptom. I haven't played it in a few months so I'm not sure which update introduced the problem, but there have been several updates to Going Medieval since I last played it, so it's possible an update introduced it.

The issue is this: when I click the play button after installing a game, it silently crashes without ever opening the game. There is no popup or other feedback as to why the game is not being launched. Sometimes a "Synchronizing Steam Cloud..." window will popup for a second or two and then close.

I've already Verified integrity of local game files. It didn't identify any issues and it's never helped before on any of the other games I've seen this happen. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling which also did not help.

I tried running Horizon Zero Dawn from the windows command terminal and that also failed to either start or generate an error log. Just to prove my approach is correct, I started another game (Against the Storm) from the console with the same command and it ran correctly.
.
Similarly, launching the .exes directly either with or without admin permissions also silently fails.

If anyone can point me towards an error log or some other way to find out why they're failing; even that would be a big help.

Below are what seems to be the relevant parts of Steam's content_log file when trying to launch I Was A Teenage Exocolonist which is one of the games that seems to be impacted.

[2022-12-06 10:29:42] Game 1148760 adding PID 6796 as a tracked process "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Exocolonist\Exocolonist.exe"

[2022-12-06 10:29:45] AppID 1148760 state changed : Fully Installed,

exit code -1073741819 converted to hex is C0000005. I haven't found the windows error code list, but several other sites seem to think C0000005 indicates an "unhandled access violation."

That's maybe too much detail? The simple version is that a number of different programs all seem to be failing to start the same way, uninstalling and re-installing does not fix it, but other programs (including chrome thankfully) run without issue.

Attempted fixes:
I uninstalled I Was a Teenage Exocolonist via Steam (where I first noticed the problem); got the Epic Launcher, bought and installed it through Epic; and the game still does not launch.

I have updated my video drivers but am still seeing the same issue.

Ran https://www.memtest.org/ overnight (night of 12/29-12/30) and it passed 6 times.
Ran https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php and it detected no issues.

I tried disabling all the built-in Windows antivirus and firewall etc. services; doing so had no impact I could see; so I've re-enabled them back to the defaults that make Windows happy.

Recent changes: None :(
I rotate which games are installed once or twice a week on average but no new major software or hardware changes. No VPN etc. Same IP provider for the past 2 years.

Windows auto-update is on and keeps the OS current. I suppose it's not impossible some OS update is related to the issue.

Operating system: I am on windows 10 Home (version 22H2 OS Build 19045.2251).

System specs: Steam, Epic, and all games are installed on the C drive along with the OS.
I have a vive CV1 VR headset attached to my PC at all times (it's more convenient to keep it setup).
I am using a homebuilt PC using a mix of new parts in 2019 and parts from the previous machine:

You could try running DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4224 and then installing the latest GPU drivers.

If that doesn't help you might have to try completely reinstalling steam to another directory.

You could check event viewer and see if anything is showing up in the application or system logs when you try to launch a game.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like there may be a problem with a mono-2.0-bdwgc.dll. I tried deleting it. When I ask Steam to verify local files it notices it's missing and will reinstall it, but that doesn't seem to fix the issue. Anyone know what that dll is used for?

I'd run https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php and see if any errors show up on your drive.

If not, I'd try installing the game/program to another directory if possible.
