I am from Canada so perhaps unsurprisingly I listen to a lot of Canadian bands. Was thinking of making a CanCon thread a while back... Lately, I've been going through a bunch of my old CDs and have been rediscovering a bunch of acts I used to listen to, so I figured I'd just start posting them here. So that Canada didn't entirely become taken over by American radio, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) was founded to ensure specific percentages of Canadian content (CanCon) was either produced or broadcast on television and radio. For example: Canadian content requirements for music on Canadian radio posted:https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/cancon/r_cdn.htm I dunno, I don't want to make an obnoxiously long OP, but I also want to post something to kick it off, so here's a selection of bands across the country that I like... as I pull all my CDs out of boxes, I'm going to post other Canadian artists I'm listening to.  The New Pornographers (British Columbia) - Use It Vancouver-based group, formed of a musician collective of people from other bands. Includes Kathryn Calder, who does solo stuff and also plays in Immaculate Machine, Neko Case, and the bassist from The Evaporators among others. Linked video has cameos from Narduar the Human Serviette of The Evaporators... and also David Cross!  Tegan and Sara (Alberta) - Walking With a Ghost From Calgary, Alberta. Identical twin indie folk duo. Also, here's The White Stripe's cover.  The Sheepdogs (Saskatchewan) - Feeling Good lol, had to wrack my mind a bit to remember a band out of Saskatchewan. Sheepdogs, I guess.  The Weakerthans (Manitoba) - The Reasons Frequently slept on indie punk band. Won a bunch of awards (nominated for a Juno!) yet I am always surprised when I meet someone who has also heard of them. I'll admit, I was really tempted to post Crash Test Dummies as my Manitoba band, though, ha.  The Tragically Hip (Ontario) - The Darkest One This is one of the most CanCon music videos you can get. It's The Tragically Hip in a music video with the Trailer Park Boys, who are also notable for featuring Rush on their show, and they wind up fighting Don Cherry at the 3:30 minute mark.  The Dears (Quebec) - Ticket to Immortality Husband-and-wife indie rock band. One of my favourites. They've done some amazing opening acts for a lot of much bigger bands, but are great in their own right--first time I saw them was when they opened for Matthew Good.  Stompin' Tom Connors (Prince Edward Island) - The Ketchup Song Even more CanCon than The Tragically Hip. Those unfamiliar with this titan of Canadian folk music have likely heard the Hockey Song.  Les Hay Babies (New Brunswick) - Jacqueline Some Francophone content... from an small Acadian village. Female indie-pop trio. Slick music, slick videos. En francais.  Great Big Sea (Newfoundland Labrador) - End of the World Feels obligatory to post when talking about Newfoundland. Play a lot of fast-paced versions of old Maritime sea shanties. Most well known for this track, though.  Buck 65 (Nova Scotia) - Wicked and Weird I remember hearing this song back in 03/04 and it's one of those earworms that has always popped up again and again at odd times for me, especially because years later I heard the same bassline in a Louis XIV song. Love the weird video... but surprised to discover Buck 65 wasn't a one-hit wonder, haha. Guy has like 20 albums to his name and is a CBC DJ. I clearly need to explore CanCon more.  Tanya Tagaq (The Territories (Nunavut)) - SILA w/ A Tribe Called Red In true Canadian fashion, I'm going to lump the territories together because I don't know lot of artists from up north--a lot are country and folk, genres I'm not hugely up on, so individually I cannot do them justice. Besides, Tanya Tagaq is iconic and this track she did with A Tribe Called Red loving slaps. I first heard of her listening to Bjork.

More than any specific artist, I find the CBC music streams one of the greatest things on the internet. The whole reason I initially bought a VPN was to listen to CBC radio 3 around geoblock. Every now and then I go through a whole bunch of music videos on youtube. I've been listening to a lot of the Hip lately, and I'm back to being amazed by Gord's ability to just... say poo poo. Like more than just the lyrics or even the story telling, he'll say random poo poo and somehow it's always perfect. He begins a song by saying it's "about a real chicken salad sandwich of a girl I fell in love with." I have no idea what that means or how that series of words even occurs to someone, but it works.

They've already got a pretty strong presence in the Post-Rock thread but hey, Godspeed You! Black Emperor is Canadian. I fell off them for a while and then picked up their last 3 albums all in one go a little while back and now Anthem For No State is one of my favorite pieces of music, period. Every time it comes up in my rotation I kind of just have to stop and listen to the whole 15 minutes. So first CD I pulled out was this pop punk band from Vancouver I listened to in high school, Billy and the Lost Boys: I only have their 2004 album but they put out a few other ones on their Bandcamp. This one has a number of tracks that still hold up, imo. "You Get What Everyone Gets (You Get a Lifetime)" is still a banger. Video's fun too. They put on good live shows, so it gets me a bit nostalgic, haha. Other good tracks off that album: Other solid tracks I'd recommend are "Devon's Song" and "Just Say Something". 2006 is their last release and I don't recall seeing any shows with them past that year. Fun rediscovering them, though. And another one I pulled out was Operation Makeout. Another Vancouver band from the early 2000s, but with more of a surf punk sound. Their EP to this day has one of my favourite gross covers:   Couldn't find First Base on YouTube, but thankfully it's all been uploaded to Bandcamp. I think the whole EP is rock solid, but standouts include "You, Me, and Geometry" and "Haircut". Their only full album release was "Hang Loose":  Also a solid album, one I was content to have paid money for when I was a broke high schooler going to punk shows. Starts real strong with "Life On Your Windowsill" and is solid throughout. Some of the tracks towards the end are less catchy, but they've all got such a bright energy it's a blast to listen to. "On The Steps" is probably my favourite track of the album. It even had a secret track that was a short sort of glitch pop surf punk redux of "You, Me, and Geometry". Anyways, I was always bummed out they dissolved. Easily one of my favourite live shows as a teenager.

been listening to Arcade Fire's debut EP again recently. I first heard of them when Funeral dropped, but when I went to the record store all I could find as EP so this was my first experience. absolutely love this--one of my favourite EPs any band has ever put out. The whole thing is just so well put together. Vampire/Forest Fire and the original version of No Cars Go still hold up the best in my version. Never cared for the Neon Bible version of No Cars Go... This in turn made me put on The Suburbs again only for The Suburbs, which is what I think is their best song. Good band, though. Kind of stopped listening to them after Suburbs. they really influenced me when I was young and playing in my own bands. got to see them live at the PNE in Vancouver. Wolf Parade and La Belle Orcheste opened for them, which made for an absolutely amazing show. Arcade Fire was touring Funeral and Wolf Parade was touring Apologies to the Queen Mary. As an aside, I'd also toss in Wolf Parade's Apologies as one of my top 10 favourite albums. I just adore the whole thing, really. They eventually toured Russia/Eastern Europe and put out an album called Face Control, a bleak and romantic kind of album, which builds up to the final track and one that is very dear to me, Radio Kaliningrad. Back in 2012 they released their debut album featuring one of the most beautiful and emotional pieces of Canadian music I have ever heard, Holland. i've just started trying to get into Handsome Furs recently! grabbed their albums at a radio station CD sale. haven't given them a proper listen to, so I should bump them up the queue. Wolf Parade is weird with how many side projects they have. I have not listened to them all nor can i seem to keep up.
