I realize part of the problem is lower thread/forum engagement overall, but the number of ballots submitted for the year end awards is low, and often, only partial ballots are submitted. 1. What is the best way to take in ballots? - Google form with short answer options - Google form with multiple choice options - Text ballot emailed to a dummy account - Other 2. The sheer amount of categories is pretty big and unwieldy. We should probably trim things down - What categories should we keep entirely - What categories should be combined - What categories should be fully removed 3. Other stuff! - why we get not many votes??? how get more votes???

Less categories and make them multiple choice (3-4 choices each?) with an option for a "write in" I think I clicked this year's ballot, and just got intimidated by how much time I was going to have to spend filling it out. Each category I have to enter three things, so it feels like if there are 20 categories, I'm filling out 60 things. Fighter of the year KO of the year Sub of the year Fight of the year Card of the year maybe one more... worst fight/event/ref of the year? e: If you don;t like multiple choice, list the top 3 curated choices on the form, so I don't have to switch back and forth between tabs, and I can just copy and paste.

I only filled in one option in most of the top 3 anyway, so I'm fine leaving it as-is and telling people they only have to do 0-3 in any category. If that voting page had 60 spots I probably only filled in about 20-30 and I was happy with that. I'm trying to put only thread-nomination-worthy stuff in my spreadsheet this year, so the categories I'm tracking for myself are KO, sub, fight, and performance, most likely. I guess if I remember to mark rounds specifically. For the lesser categories, I have poo poo recall but if people (including myself) remember to put stuff like bad refereeing and comedy in the thread, it's very easy for me to vote off the list and that's what I did for many of these. My philosophy is kinda "during that 4 week down period as the year turns over, which 2023 stuff would I actually enjoy rewatching to fill that time?"

Also, I'm going to drop noms for kickboxing and Muay Thai (and I guess bare knuckle since I watch all of those too) in this thread, even if they don't get gathered up at the end of the year. That's just so that people can bookmark this thread and find cool stuff to check out even if they don't want to keep up with the monthly and GDTs.

Which categories in 2022 had the lowest response rates? That's where I'd start looking. I know that like social media trash talk and best show I just go like "idfk", many of the "worst" categories I dislike outside of the bad officiating shame.

Another idea I just had is that we could try to periodically have discussions throughout the year aimed toward creating a short list out of the existing nominations which can make things easier to review at the year's end. These can just happen whenever someone feels like starting the conversation - "ok it's April and we have 8 nominations for knockout of the year. Out of these I think these 5 are cool but probably won't win so lets highlight the 2 best ones and here are some gifs of them // well this one that you don't like is pretty rad and i found a gif // ok we'll keep it for now but lets try to limit it to 10 at year's end". Being on the "short list" could simply be bolding it in the post and adding a link - that alone could take a lot of the hassle out of choosing winners.

If not, then coolest moment) and Submission of the Year UFC 285 Alexa Grasso sub Valentina Shevchenko By the way I want to stop for a moment and as a grappling nerd draw attention to the quality of Grasso's finish there - it wasn't "just an rnc" after a cool back take - it was a picture perfect chin-in RNC/chinlock and you can see her adjusting the technical details progressively as she gets the finish by altering the relative placement of her hands and head and by doing a crunch and twist finish, and by maintaining control through a grip fight. This might not seem like a big deal but elite fighters screw up these details and miss out on finishes all the time, and I know this because I'm obsessed with this particular version of the RNC within my own grappling and I watch for it.
