So the question is whether the Telegram story is actually legitimate or simply a pile of you-know-what.

The problem at this point isn't Putin, it's all the other assholes tied to him whose corrupt little fiefdoms will be severely disrupted when he dies and the inevitable power struggle happens. That would and will happen even if he dies peacefully in his sleep, but if he gets murdered because of the Ukraine war it will be 10x worse. So basically all the assholes are engaged in denial/kicking the can down the road/magical thinking on the basis of 'better the devil you know' and 'surely I won't be killed myself by Putin for one reason or another's. This is basically the sole reason Putin wasn't assassinated months ago: a whole bunch of other assholes are invested in this status quo and they lack the mental facilities to even begin to question when the sunk cost is too much.

He’s hiding in some bunker under a mountain in the middle of nowhere. He doesn’t allow anyone to get close to him except his personal guards. And he has very tight control over the oligarchs, they are terrified of moving against him. All this to say assassination likelihood seems slim. And if it happens whoever replaces him will be worse.

I always assumed that at some point an elderly Russian lady would decide that she was sick of his poo poo and just end him. Problem is, he's totally surrounded by sycophantic goons who have an interest in him succeeding. So the "insider bullet to the head" scenario is (unfortunately) pretty unlikely. If anyone is hoping the US simply drops a bomb on him, you gotta consider that nobody in the west knows where he is. The Russians are taking extraordinary measures to hide his location. For exactly the reason I'm suggesting. Maybe the US should offer a bounty: $1Million USD (or whatever) to whomever ices him. Yes, I know that violates many laws, but I don't GAF. It would end the war. gently caress him.
