My old boss kinda sucked in that there were a bunch of skirting of rules then everything kinda blew up and he peace'd out on a new job while we had to pick up the pieces for a while. Luckily I was promoted out to a different region and my current boss is about as laid back but there's just nothing upcoming that can blow up in our faces like in the old job. I might even promote since the current area is a tad bit over strength and there is a coverage gap in a different part of the state, so the solution is to have one of us thats willing to move go there.

i'm retired and live offa socialist security moneys and a feeble little pension though i will mention a few bosses from my last job. one was a supervisor who bitched me out for clocking out 1 minute early. i asked him if he went and told the teacher when other kids colored outside the lines.

another supervisor we called the chickadee because getting chewed out by him was like getting pecked to death by a tiny bird. it didn't really hurt but it lasted for-loving-ever.

the last one was a decent fellow and when i was getting my yearly eval he asked, "where do you see yourself in 5 years". i told him i'd be high as hell, day drinking and loving around on the internet. he said i'm not gonna write that down but okay

sounds about right. the "manager" title fills that particular niche of a grody entitled gen-x )+/-) type whose mostly failed their entirely life and has a chip on their shoulder but feels empowered by considering themselves a restaurant manager as if it means they're succeeding on 45k/yr while puffing themselves up on meth and trying to gently caress young chicks to feel youthful and powerful again.

The best boss I ever had was during high school and college working in a upscale grocery store. She was the front end manager and was a union employee like the rest of us, so she went to bat for us on every single thing. She would fight corporate management for merit raises on our behalf and tell rear end in a top hat customers to get out of the store. I will always remember her rolling up her sweater sleeves and smoking a heater while shoveling snow off of front sidewalk of the store in the winter.

The worst boss I ever had was the non-union store manager at that same grocery store. The only non-union employee in the store, he lied to us constantly and did everything he could to undermine employee solidarity. At one point there was a directive from corporate to cut hours by 5%, but he lied and said it was 15%, and of course got a bigger bonus because of us working our butts off to get the store stocked in less time each week.

My current boss at my boring office job is very kind but is a company man to the core, so none of us get more than a 2% raise annually.

Worked on a temp contract doing customer support at a major Scandinavian IT company that does online banking software. The owner of the temp agency was himself employed at the company and had paid the department manager under the table to get the contract. The pay was absolute dog poo poo, but I had nothing else going for me at the time, job was easy, and I got to work with a good friend of mine. We'd smoke up and watch Netflix between calls during evening shifts.

The call center manager was a real gem. He'd got the job through a friend in upper management. Most of the time he would "work" from home, but he showed up once or twice a week to oversee his minions and berate us. Once he dumped some Excel work on me and another guy, we had no idea what we were doing and he instructed us poorly, since he obviously couldn't figure it out for himself. Turns out it was metrics reports for the board and we'd been inadvertently loving them up for months. :lmao: His crowning achievement was asking us to stay in the building during a loving fire alarm.

Department manager also failed to notice a second-line employee (non-temp, made like $7K/month) had been coming in for nine months just to play with his phone, they simply forgot to assign him any work. He was quietly let go. This was right after call center shifts had been cut, increasing our workload 50% and loving with our lunch schedule. hosed off from that place not long after.

Current boss is okay.

my boss instituted 4-day work weeks which is cool and good, but now we don't get holidays because "that's too many 3-day weeks." if a holiday is on a monday, which is like 8 or the 11 of them every year, we have to work that Friday to make up for it

he got wind of complaining and yelled at people who were using PTO days on that friday. he doesn't seem to understand that working the same amount of hours each week means we don't actually get holidays off despite "not having to work on that day!"

Not a bad boss story but the most exciting one I got.

Years ago I worked on a crew for a small time construction contractor. This new hire kid was refusing to work because he wouldn't take orders from the black foreman. Our manager was on site and came over to resolve the situation. With a completely straight face he ordered the foreman to beat the guy to death with a shovel and for us to use the excavator to bury him in the ditch. After we all just stood around for a minute he sighed and told the guy he was fired and to start walking.

I just realized this was over 30 yrs ago gently caress

The accountants love it too cuz they don't have to have a bunch of accrued PTO as a liability on the books. So really a win-win that less PTO gets used and it looks better for their books.

My two worst bosses were at the same job lmao. I was working at a tutoring company while studying at uni, which mostly involved teaching babysitting kids for four or five hours on weekdays, or from 8am to maybe 4 or 5pm during school holidays, and writing exam papers, marking homework, etc. They said the papers were all written by qualified teachers but they were mostly all written by me lmfao.

My team leader, who I knew from uni, is the one who got me the job, and he was great for a while but then started giving off some extreme Nice Guy energy. Sort of started fine, but at some point I was being pressured into giving the dude backrubs that I didn't want to give him, even though I said I didn't, and he was apparently going around to mutuals calling me his "backup boyfriend". Eventually he had this huge meltdown about a block away from work, screaming and crying at me because I was "embarrassing" him (presumably by not actually being in a relationship with the fucker) and literally, physically forced me to go home rather than come in. Which cost me money and got me in trouble with the Big Bosses, naturally.

Eventually he left and I moved up and took his space, which put me into more direct contact with another layer of middle management. My first run of middle managers was fine, but then they were replaced because they were too kind to the workers and we ended up with Hell Woman. She didn't know her job, which required her coming to me a lot for help training her up because the Big Bosses weren't gonna give a gently caress. But she clearly resented that people came to me authority rather than her, and so tried to get me to quit by throwing three people's worth of work at me and expecting me to keep up. They eventually got me into a position where I was doing one-on-one tutoring of the boss's son on top of all this other crap.

After a few months she started doing crazy poo poo like fiddling with people's timesheets, which obviously got everyone loving mad at her, but they were also mostly dumb middle class kids and mostly didn't really give a gently caress about their rights or how much they were meant to be getting paid. But this also got me into conflict with management, because I was telling people to photocopy their timesheets, and to keep a copy of their contracts instead of letting the bosses take them and hide them somewhere.

One day, during one of those 8 to 5pm holiday days, Hell Boss made a big dumb mistake that meant that, due to overcrowding and poor scheduling, they weren't going to be able to give any of these kids a lunch break. It'd mean too many kids out playing at the same time in a small concrete parking lot they called "the playground". I offered to reschedule the classes so that breaks could be staggered (it'd be honestly really easy thing to do) but I was shut down and told to just go and mark, and that when play times came along I was meant to just keep the kids inside their rooms -- and by rooms we're talking about seven tiny rooms with a dozen kids each, no windows and no air conditioning, in summer. But when break time came I just said gently caress it and took all the classes downstairs to one of the large classrooms, put on some Steven Universe.

Don't think I lasted very long after that, the whole job was absolutely soul crushing. Kids man, you can't treat kids like that. Still makes me really mad to think about.

my old boss would be bullied by his wife into sending me text chastising me for some small mistake. liek he'd have to do something while she watched to get her off his back. at first it was big wtf but he'd explain to me in the low down voice he was forced to do it. so I came to relish his seinfeld'esqe life where hes being bullied by his wife all the time. indian guy so he'd get dragged to social events, dealing with in-laws he hates just showing up and couch crashingf or weeks, etc. man worked (actual work) like 10 hour days 6 days a week in his small business and was pwned constantly and utterly. he quit drinking purely to spite his wife by decreasing her leverage in arguments. he definitely made money, but it his absurd suffering for it was incredible. they were both absolutely terrible communicators, which caused their internecine drama lol
