Colts confirm NFL investigation after report that player bet on Indianapolis games

quote:

The Indianapolis Colts confirmed on Monday that the NFL is investigating following a report that a player conducted “pervasive” betting activities, including bets on Colts games.

The Colts acknowledged the investigation in a statement.

"We are aware of the NFL’s investigation and will have no further comment at this time," the statement reads.

The statement arrived moments after sports betting publication Sports Handle reported that the NFL is investigating a single Colts player for potential violations of the league's sports betting policy. A source told the outlet that evidence points to the player betting on hundreds of games, with some of those bets being placed on the Colts. It's not clear if the player is accused of betting on the Colts to win or lose. The player is not identified in the report, but it is reportedly a current member of the team. Per the report, the player placed most of his bets in 2022 and some in 2023.

Seems right within the realm of gambling degeneracy. Can you bet on the LLWS or high school sports? Seems like that would be the next milestone on the slippery slope.

After the Ohtani/Ippei thing, after Jontay, are any of these ESPN talking heads saying on their shows that maybe sports leagues should stop getting in bed with gambling companies? i mean a million normal people are saying it, you'd think it'd be a big topic of discussion in the media. Maybe someone's been talking about it but i just haven't seen it? But if it really has conspicuously been absent from discussion that tells you all you need to know, that none of the leagues are going back on this even in the face of what we've seen.

Hold your horses we don't want a few bad apples to spoil the bunch, it's a skill issue, no need to legislate players betting on their own games it's on them to avoid it and if we take it out we're destroying the spirit of the game - personal accountability, individual excellence, and so on.

You joke, but the actual ESPN approach to discussing Ohtani was Stephen A Smith yelling about how the liberation of American gambling is our country's greatest freedom.

I've always kinda wondered why any athlete would want a big social media presence. They've always been subject to horrific comments just as a result of their play, and I suspect it gets much worse with gambling in the mix. I don't use twitter, but surely there's an option to not accept DMs from randos. Or do enough hot chicks or celebrities message them to offset the aggrieved white men?

Only a matter of time some degenerate takes it upon themselves to kill someone who "cost them a bet" instead of telling them to do it themselves.

A backup playing in a blowout at a WCC basketball game missed a free throw and ended up with their DMs full of extremely specific death threats that led to the FBI going and talking to the guy who sent them, and that's just the start of it.

NCAA president isn’t happy about prop bets, shockingly enough, and how all TV coverage is just gambling now.

quote:

“Did any of you notice how much time was spent on cable TV about Caitlin Clark’s prop performance (after the) first (national semifinals) game leading into the second game?” Baker said. “Was that really what we should be talking about in the middle of a women’s Final Four? I think the answer for that for most people is no.”

that's the exact Pete Rose thing heh. If they bet on one game, then maybe they try harder at that game and go all out, then they recuperate the next game. Or if they were a manager or coach or trainer, they might play a player more in the bet-on game rather than the next one. There's all sorts of ways it can pretty critical threaten the integrity of it all

As someone who's been paid to do sports information research since 2007, mostly on soccer, you'll have to forgive me because I tend to think of things that affect the integrity of the game as things like Spot Fixing and full-blown Match Fixing since those do not infrequently happen at lower levels of the sport where players don't make much money.

You might think it wouldn't happen in the USA or Canada, but there was a semi-pro Canadian league that had its sanctioning pulled by the Canadian Soccer Association after a Match Fixing investigation uncovered that $100,000,000 was bet on the league over the course of one season. The average player in the league was making hundreds of dollars a month.

42% percent of games suspected of Match Fixing!

If I had to guess who would take that much in bets on semi-pro soccer, it would probably some places in Southeast Asia that take bets on basically any sports league in existence. Places like that are why there have been services like InPlay TV (might be getting the name wrong) that allow you to latch on to questionable live streams for seemingly every sporting event you could possibly think of.

Jontay Porter apparently wasn't betting on basketball, but he was still giving advice to bettors about games he was playing on. Odds are that he's still in really deep poo poo.

Also, lost in the indictment against Shohei Ohtani's interpreter was that the $16 million in theft from Ohtani was part of $40 million in gambling debt he racked up. He made rougly 180 million dollars at the illegal sportsbook he was placing wagers through.
