The only way this would work is if there was socialism in America but it still kept doing imperialism. The main differences as I see it is you get healthcare and cheaper housing but are maybe paid less (idk what an American retail worker gets).

You think under socialism there would be no stores?? Or do you mean it wouldn't be possible to have the shorter work week. Once all the marketers and data scientists have returned from the reeducation camps they can work the deli section or something, more evenly distributing the necessary labor time for social reproduction more evenly.

It wouldn't be possible to have the shorter work week. They can fix the crumbling infrastructure or some other task which isn't being done properly.

It's loving hard work doing that stuff 40 hours a week or sometimes way more because that's what time of year it is. I do it very part time and that's great but speaking from experience full time you're mostly just tired.

I do like the idea that as a socialist society we'd split that kind of tough work that nobody really wants to do full-time among lots of other people, kind of like jury duty. So in a fairer society we'd do just enough of that stuff to get outside for a few hours each week, sweat a bit, get a bit dirty, move our bodies, but not so much that it becomes onerous. Reporting in for manual labor duty would be like mowing the lawn on Saturday, and it wouldn't be restricted to just one type of task. One week you'd be hauling stuff, another week you'd be working in a kitchen, another you'd be doing laundry or cleaning.

I hear you. I’m not totally naive to this. I grew up on a farm and have spent plenty of time splitting wood, shoveling rocks, and stacking hay. I’m quite sure my body isn’t up to the task anymore, but goddamn if I’m not sick of doing this bullshit.
