The way things are going Abbott is going to station troops on the other side of the Rio Grande to provoke another Mexican-American war. The irony of course being that the US didn’t even want to occupy Mexico in 1848 and we’re out of logical areas to annex. Well, Baja maybe? It’s pretty.

The pro-Ukraine GOP Senators (most of them) think they'll get the funding in a big, dedicated fight for the regular appropriations bills. But absolutely possible that the House refuses to let anything else though, if the MTGs and such get in the way. There's still a majority of both houses willing to fund Ukraine for a whole lot. But the House GOP is now around 50-50 and may be primed to kick out McCarthy. But again, some of this poo poo is completely unpredictable because basically nobody had our current path actually happening.

So, technically possible under the rules of the house, however, it will not happen in anything approaching reality. That said, the Republican party can't get it's head out of its own rear end at all, so it would be pretty funny if they did do it, even if it wouldn't be effective.

Wrong Theory posted:In gently caress cancer news: The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has awarded $45 million to rapidly develop sense-and-respond implant technology that could slash U.S. cancer-related deaths by more than 50%. They're already thinking about combining THOR with "drug factory" implants they designed last year which can be implanted next to a tumor and will produce a 30 day dose of Interleukin-2, which is a potent anti-cancer protein which activates your immune system to fight cancer. In mouse tests they were able to 100% cure advanced ovarian cancer and cured 87% of advanced colorectal cancer, within 7 days of implantation. Eradicating large tumors in 7 days is mind blowing. They also ran a mouse trial late last year for mesothelioma, and it eliminated 100% of tumors in the mice the "drug factories" were implanted in. The implants can produce far more Interleukin-2 than can be safely administered by IV during treatment, and it goes directly to the tumor, instead of circulating through the body and causing adverse effects. If you were to administer the drug amount from the implant conventionally, you'd kill the patient with the immune response through their entire body, but since it is trailed out over 30 days and localized to the tumor area, it causes no issues. (the immunotherapy drug factory can be tailored to the type of cancer as well, so if Interleukin-2 doesn't work, they can use a different protein that is effective in treating that particular cancer) If this stuff actually works in humans, then you could be looking at a no poo poo 100% cure for a broad swath of cancers, you go under the knife to get a few small, temporary medical implants that regulate your body's immune response to the cancer, and adapts the response to the tumor environment, and puts the "targeting proteins" your body looks for around the tumors, and then you're cured in a month. The human body is really amazing at fighting cancer, your body kills thousands and thousands of potential cancer cells every day, cancer only is successful in persisting when it can manage to fool the immune system. This kind of stuff is the stuff oncologists have been dreaming about for decades. orange juche fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Oct 1, 2023 |

Platystemon posted:It’s still possession. Fun fact: Possession doesn't even require you to physically touch a firearm, merely having access to it as - say - the sole person in a room. Learned that when I woke up one morning in the living room of a friend's house where I crashed on the couch after a bender. My buddy and his friends continued drinking, smoking weed and playing FIFA until retiring to their individual bedrooms. Turns out they figured it was time for 2A show-and-tell at some point and they just left the gat chilling on the table next to various paraphernalia of varying legality (I think). I kindly reminded my buddy that I'm on an F-1 visa and his place had a history of being busted by campus PD and my legal resident status had mixed feelings about being caught in a room with guns and drugs on the table. He told me I was being "too dramatic" about it because the gun was legally his and he had a card so the weed was legal as well, which didn't check out in my book, so I did some research and followed up with some calls to the AZ ATF office in Phoenix for some "hypothetical scenarios". The agent I spoke with was actually super chill and happy to help out with my questions, pointing out if I'm the only one with direct access to an unsecured firearm, I'm legally in possession of it. Same with supervised access, he even talked about some precedents where international students lost their legal resident status on account of being at a completely legal firing range. Your American buddy wants to take you shooting, stops at the gas station, goes inside to pay, you're in the car alone with a firearm? Possession. You're at a firing range with your international student friends to shoot some guns, you filled out all the paperwork, paid your fee, you're aiming downrange at some paper targets with a range officer 9ft away? Possession. The dude was even enthusiastic enough to point out that I, as a non-citizen deutschbag, could join a hunting club at NAU and apply for a hunting license through the AZ board of game and fish or whatever the gently caress to find a legal way around all those shenanigans, which is how I learned that there's a completely legal way for international students to buy rifles at gun shows (but not pistols lol). I'd still lose my F-1 visa because no guns allowed on campus and without being enrolled, I lose my resident status, but I'd still legally own a gun until I leave the country Duzzy Funlop fucked around with this message at 04:52 on Oct 1, 2023 |

Midjack posted:holy poo poo Ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, mesothelioma, these are cancers that are famously aggressive, and very difficult to treat, usually requiring aggressive surgical intervention and even then, there's often bits left over because those cancers quickly metastatize. A 100% cure in those three cancers alone would reduce the death rate from cancer significantly. I'm curious how it does with the various types of kidney cancer, because my father had an aggressive case of kidney cancer where they had to take his kidney, spleen and 3 of his ribs, and it still metastatized to various parts of his body and they had to subject him to 2 years of aggressive immunotherapy under a clinical trial to put it into remission. He's still alive, but it absolutely turned a tall, strong guy into a shrivelled up husk. He said if it comes back he's just going to let it kill him, vs trying to fight it again. If this therapy actually works, and can be used for his cancer, then he may not have to deal with fighting it again.
