The three things that are actually bad for your eyes: 1. eyestrain from not using glasses when you need glasses 2. dryness and lack of lubrication because you don't blink enough 3. focusing at close range for a long time without breaks Dark mode might help with 2 & 3, particularly where you have a big difference in contrast between the screen and the rest of your surroundings. A bright screen in a dark room is often bad because you will tunnel in and not look away. (Though TBQH even dark mode in a dark room will have this effect some, don't use screens in the dark.) The other thing that can help is having the lights on so your room isn't dark. And aside from that, probably no, dark mode is not universally more readable or better for your eyes. Though on many websites these days dark mode *is* way more readable because it has some goddamn contrast, versus the light mode that's actually grey-on-grey garbage.
