I got it for the first time around the end of last month, gave me a bad cough for three solid weeks. It super sucks and I am not cool with that happening to me multiple times a year for the rest of my life I'm traveling for work right now and everyone everywhere, coast to coast, is coughing. I was straight up the only person I saw in a mask (disposable N95) in the DFW airport (of course). I flew there sitting between two people hacking their lungs out the whole flight (unmasked). Luckily on my following flight only the person to my left was hacking and honking the whole flight (no mask). The lady to my right seemed fine but her traveling partner across the aisle brought a good hack for their group vacation (mask? on vacation?). I think I'm okay for now after making it through a travel day of declining all in flight refreshments, but the future is not looking good wrt to public health, imo

We had about 6 before we put up a "NO CANDY" sign, the last of which felt like they slammed into / kicked our door. Love anxiety night. Ah well, on to November.

Trying to imagine what form of anxiety becomes crippling when children in costume ring the door bell, then really trying to imagine how the thought of putting a "NO TREATS" sign on the door is a good idea considering the desired outcome. I bought two bags from Costco and gave out fistfuls, but the weather was crappy enough that I've still got half remaining. Got a Pfizer shot yesterday, with all my other Pfizer shots knocking me out for 24 hours and so far I just feel really sore (but capable of going to work)

The pro move is to live in a neighborhood where you don't let your kids go outside until they're too old to trick or treat.

Even if kids trick-or-treated in my neighborhood, I'm pretty sure they'd avoid my scary-rear end looking meth-asthetic house. I watched an Amazon delivery guy stop at the head of my footpath, contemplate my house for a minute, then hurl my package 15 feet towards my front door the other day.

I wish I got trick or treaters. I'd give out full size candy bars.

Huh. I'd thought the 'porch light on = we have candy, porch light off = no candy/not home' was more widespread.

Vorkosigan posted:Huh. I'd thought the 'porch light on = we have candy, porch light off = no candy/not home' was more widespread. Yeah same. This year my wife had to work late and we have a giant and very loud barking to strangers (but very friendly after settling down) dog and I didn't want to deal with trying to chat and play nice with the little kids on the front steps with him barking behind me the whole time. I just set the bowl of candy out front with the light on and the kids took whatever. I am not a big halloween person at all. If we got tons of traffic I'd put in a little effort I guess so the neighborhood kids had more fun but we at least spring for the good candy. Only got 2-3 visits but that's pretty standard here.

I'm not big on Halloween, but my 4 year old absolutely loves going around in his costume and seeing all the other kids doing the same (and the candy, of course), so I bravely ventured forth. Pretty sure I wore a permanent track in my vocal cords reminding him to say "thank you" at each house.Vorkosigan posted:Huh. Yeah I thought that was pretty universal, along with the bowl and sign for folks who want to participate but can't/don't want to man the door for several hours.

One house was fully decorated, lights on and a sign over the doorbell to not ring or knock due to mother with small children…. Wtf peeps. Anyways I love this poo poo and had a great time escorting around my daughter and her friend. They pooped out before me due to not taking into consideration ease of movement in their costume. Not sure how many more years they will want to do this but I got a plan to either air bnb a house for one night to give out candy or find a friend with a house in a popular neighborhood and work the door for them.

Got to wear my banging plague doctor outfit to hand out candy which I enjoy doing. I imagine someone has done a thesis on it somewhere or whatever but something about the look of a plague doctor really triggers some part of the human lizard-brain that scares small children pretty effectively and I find it funny every Halloween. Not much traffic though, everyone goes a few streets over to the other neighborhood with much denser housing that is also the richer, glitzier part of the neighborhood.

Protip when buying candy- buy the candy YOU like so, if there's some left over, you have incentive to eat it. Whether the kiddos like Crunch or Kit-Kat is up to them at my house. Related, I realized I was transitioning to old codger bastard mode the first time I saw someone drive their kids around our completely walkable neighborhood on a god drat golf cart. The golf cart thing started with one older guy who took his bichon for rides; there are now like 12 in my neighborhood and I die a little inside every time Jayden and Zaylie don't have to do the neighborhood (e- on foot) in costume as I did in the '90s. e- Unrelated, today is Don Jr. Testimony Day! Meanwhile, Amy Schumer is having meltdowns in people's DMs: https://twitter.com/aasian/status/1719717713700962720 ...and got dunked on by a member of the King family: https://twitter.com/Remroum/status/1719531624663007420 CBJSprague24 fucked around with this message at 16:28 on Nov 1, 2023 |
