Disco Godfather: May 31, 2011

Fuji Golf
A sports comedy with Will Ferrell as a washed-up pro golfer who gets invited to a tournament in Japan where an eccentric billionaire forces different athletes to play for their lives. You could get a lot of international box office appeal by casting movie stars from India, China, Latin America, etc. as the other golfers at the tournament. At the end of the movie, once the Will Ferrell character is safely back home with his family, he opens up a newspaper and we see the front page headline reads "Skiier Spots Abominable Snowman."

Chip's Challenge
A streaming series about a middle school student and his diverse group of friends who tackle issues relevant to modern-day kids, such as social media addiction and cyber-bullying by day and then enter a CGI computer world at night to save the internet by collecting things and opening doors. Except for s1e07, which is a flashback episode about the guy who created all of the different shoes.

The big prestige one everybody is going to be waiting for. People around the world have been mysteriously disappearing and no one knows why. At first, hardly anyone noticed since it started with the very lowest classes of people. An intrepid journalist has been trying to get people to pay attention, but no one thinks they're vulnerable until people like them start disappearing too. She tries to find the source of the mystery, but as people around her begin to vanish, it may be too late. And if she disappears too, where will she go?

Minesweeper
Minesweeper tells the story of the only Black soldier in his unit during the Vietnam War. Naturally they give him the most dangerous, expendable job: Minesweeper. After most of the squad gets killed behind enemy lines in an area dense with traps, the survivors have no choice but to follow the lead of the Minesweeper as he guides them to safety, earning their trust and respect in the process. The poster would have a Vietnam-era soldier from the neck down in some swamp with a yellow smiley-face button on his tattered uniform.

JezzBall
In the dystopian future, there is only one sport: JezzBall! Competitors build forcefields to trap balls of energy flying around an enclosed room. The newest star of the sport is from the lowest level of the city, where most people go their entire lives without experiencing natural light or fresh air. Unlike the others, he is playing for the opportunity to experience the outdoors for the first time. The trailer ends with big reverse woosh as the ball is heading towards the forcefield juuuuust as it's about to hit the wall and ends with the main character saying, "You don't get it. It's more than a game to me." to someone offscreen.

It's another sunny morning in New York City. Sal (Pedro Pascal) says goodbye to his daughter and heads to work at his job in the sewers. Meanwhile, Cynthia (Quinta Brunson) is giving a press conference at this city's new hi-tech sewage management center. Back in the sewer, green liquid starts to pool around Sal's boots as a low rumble builds in the distance. Everyone in the control looks up pensively at the big monitor in the control room as the rumble gets louder. The monitor shows a map of the city's sewer system turning green as the next segment rotates to couple with the previous segment. Does it land in place in time? The screen cuts to black before we see.

Scotty is a biologist excited to start his first job out of college at the FreeCell Institute, one of the world's most advanced science places. His excitement soon turns to horror as he learns the Institute's long-term project is to reveal the genetic code of everyone on Earth to sort everyone in groups. But for what purpose? The big twist at the end is that the whole thing was a prequel to Solitaire and explains what was going on there, but also raises questions of its own.

SkiFree
A regular dumb guy wins a free ski weekend in a raffle by his local hockey team and gets into bunch of hilarious fat guy scrapes while he's there, culminating in a downhill ski race. He's about to lose, when the abominable snowman runs out and devours the other guy, letting the hero win by default. In the end, he learns that getting outside your comfort zone isn't such a bad thing, and the stuck-up skiers learn to respect fat slobs.

Rattler Race
A big-budget TV series about a futuristic wasteland where wagon trains of nomads compete for what little food remains. People race to any source of food, leading to deadly competition between trains of nomads. The series is about "Rattler" Johnson and his nomad group. They are the most successful at finding food, but Rattler is concerned that the length of the train is becoming a liability.
Various background clues indicate that this is all taking place somewhere in the wasteland outside the city from JezzBall.

INT. DREAMPIPE CONTROL ROOM

Back in the control room, things are a flurry of activity. Above them, the digital map of the city shows pipes steadily filling up green as the automated pipes rotate into place ahead of the flow. The camera settles on a segment flashing red. It matches the gaze of Cynthia.
Cynthia (to herself): Come on, Sal. You can do this.
Ron: Well if he does, it better be fast unless he wants a face full of the green stuff.
The mayor bursts in with his entourage
Mayor: Okay which one of you is Cynthia Holbrooke?
Cynthia and Ron share an exasperated look before she crosses the room to meet him.
Cynthia: That would be me.
Mayor: Then maybe you can tell me why we spent half the yearly budget on an automated sewage routing system, and now every journalist in the city is outside my office saying a plumber has to fix a pipe by hand?
Cynthia: I don't know why I have to be the one to explain how municipal infrastructure to a mayor, but it'll have to wait. Right now I have a city to save.

The scene fades out and now Quinta Brunson is a guest on the Jimmy Kimmel show. The crowd is applauding, along with Jimmy's first guest, a celebrity chef, sitting to Quinta's right.
Jimmy Kimmel: Boy, I can't wait to see that... Now I understand that Pedro Pascal is known to be something of a prankster on set.
Quinta chuckles and launches into her anecdote.

Pipe Dream (2025) 126m. ** D: Craig Johnson. Pedro Pascal, Quinta Brunson, Colin Jost, Stanley Tucci. A predictable, if taut disaster flick based on a video game. The interactions between the two leads offers some spark, but shots of CGI slime quickly become tiring.
