It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

Been a loooooong time listener/donor to https://www.wefunkradio.com - Montreal college radio that has been running since '99. Hosts are Professor Groove who handles all the disco, soul, funk stuff, and DJ Static who handles all the hip hop/bboy side of things. Guests are a mixed bag for me personally but always fit in and you hear some seriously deep cuts on nearly every episode.

Speaking of deep cuts, I also listen a lot to Loose Joints on Sydney based community station FBi Radio. Don't even know how to describe the show, pulls things from like 70s afrobeat to weird 80s synthpop stuff, occasionally some newer stuff but it's always weird but catchy. Love it. Fbi also has loads of good programmes on there, some of the presenters are a bit up their own arse but it's definitely a massive net positive. Also really like Souled Out on there too, more your disco/funk/soul and the host Steve Ferris is a real pro

Oh yeah! Wefunk rules! A radio show that has been running for so long you could never hear a repeated episode. They have their own app and 24/7 stream. Been listening to them for decades.

Nothing's better than postin' in the morning!

Glad someone beat me to recommending FBi Radio. They're such an offbeat station and I love that they have a 50% Australian Music mandate. I love their morning show - which, because of the time difference, ends up being a drive-home show for me when I tune in. The station introduced me to the song Earth Angel by Hayku Kyah which hasn't left my head since they played it. Funny to look it up on YouTube later and realize it has, like, 500 views. They have seriously deep cuts on FBi.

So I mentioned Centreforce 883 as my current favorite station period with its constant live DJ sets, and Radio Ottanta as my station I would listen to almost constantly in high school in Italy, but I'd love to shout out a few stations local (or mostly local) to where I currently am that I keep on my presets:

WYSO - The local hippie town's station, mostly NPR, but when it breaks into local shows it can be great and extremely weird. Best listened to late at night for that reason if what you want is local flavor. The syndicated stuff isn't half bad either.

WWSU 106.9 - My college's station! It's, well, college radio, but it is renowned for having great coverage of the local basketball games. Way back in the day I had a radio show on this where I played new electronic music and my only real memories from it are discovering and playing Shooting Stars years before it became a meme and this one time when the person before me had replaced the standard soundbank we use for bumpers and IDs with custom clips that included several MLP clips. I had to scramble to find the original sound files just so we wouldn't get fined. :allears:

I used to love reviewing CDs for this place and got a bunch of weird ones, including an electro-swing album by a few members of Abney Park under a new name and an album that was just a bunch of metal covers of Michael Jackson that included Fozzy covering Dirty Diana.

WZLR The Eagle - I used to work here, or rather at the place that housed it and two other stations in the area, and this was my favorite. It's a pretty standard 80s station, but something about the tracklist feels really balanced to me, like you're gonna get a solid hit no matter when you tune in. It's all automated but there's nothing wrong with having some radio comfort food around.

Radio 614 - Columbus's independent station. I believe this may operate internet-only, but I'm not 100% since I haven't looked that deeply into it, but it's fun. They're very freeform and sometimes have shows and podcasts, and one time I tuned in and it was a guy ranting about the issues with CBus's public transportation for like two hours. It's fun.

I absolutely adore KFJC and it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. I discovered it in like '07 when this weird band called The Floating Corpses said they were going to be on it.

Everyone you mentioned is great, but my man CY THOTH was the king. His station IDs were the best and would build to a crescendo ending with him yelling "THE WAAAAAVE OF THE WEEEEEEST!" I once called in trying to win a t shirt and he answered and was so kind and warm despite playing absolute freak poo poo on the air. I have the recording of his last show, I should upload it somewhere.

For 20 years it was an awesome modern rock station. I learned about so many bands from their programming. It's been gone since 2003 and I still miss it.

Every year they'd compile the Modern Rock 500 and play it non-stop over Labor Day weekend and that was a great list from which to make a playlist. This year, 2023, the old DJ crew came together and created the 2023 Modern Rock 500 which was played on Inhaler Radio. It was so cool to hear all the DJ's again, and the music's still dope.

Thanks for the Wefunk recommendation! I've been looking for a station like this ever since I realized that Radio Grohningen's Next Movement stream was just repeating the final show they did over and over - huge shame. This is great stuff.

French public broadcasting. Different channels for all kinds of styles. They have really good shows and channels on classical radio. Also a concert show for new classical music every monday. French not really necessary, I think the specialised channels on the website don't even have a DJ.

I love FIP. Great tunes, no ads, very little talking. The only problem is it gets very jazzy in the evenings but they have a bunch of other genre-specific channels including a surprisingly good metal station.

It's so funny - yesterday I watched a great deep dive video on public access programming and one of the shows highlighted was Mr. Let's Paint. Today I was driving to work and Clay plays a clip from Mr. Let's Paint, who is apparently recording little Bill Nye-esque clips for WFMU. God I love weird independent community art. :hellyeah:

I watched the WFMU documentary and it wasn't great - it at least was fun to see inside the station and see a few of the personalities past and present but all it really did was make me want to read the book they took the title from...which I'm doing now!

Dont sleep on the stream only shows btw. Global grease with kim sorese and dark night of the soul with julie are bangers among many others. Double dip recess, the saturday kids show is stream only this season too and is incredible content for kids. Often when the terrestrial flagship stream has something less chill or talk focused on, they have specifically scheduled some good tunes focused show on the alt streams.

Yeah Clay is a treasure, I really should listen to him more often. I appreciate that his show is a little more of a crowd pleaser for when I’m trying to commandeer the speaker at work.

Even though the station is amazing for music my true allegiance is to Seven Second Delay, it’s been my radio comfort food for over 25 years now :)

Since most radio is podcasting simultaneously, we could throw long-playing mixes to the bunch!

Man, Triple R Radio is fantastic. Every time I tune in there's some great DJs and some great tunes. Looking at the schedule I like that there's a movie-themed show and ones based around gadgets and the like, though the time difference between Australia and here makes it hard for me to catch it all. I've made a spreadsheet just to track when a few shows from RadioSEGA, Triple R, WFMU, and a few others are on, so that's fun. Love finding new stuff from this thread!
