Oh, that's what that was. Someone played it against me and I'd never heard of it before. I mostly did Godfather Part 3 starts when I was able to, to get away from the Stallone traps.

I learned a few new escapes today after multiple people tried to kill me with Inside - Willem Dafoe. Get out with Moonwalkers, which has Ron Perlmen in it. Someone escaped from my The Mule killshot with Lowriders, which I'd never heard of but apparently it has Melissa Benoist in it so you can get out with Whiplash or Patriot's Day.

My most reliable skip-burners/killshots at the moment are Harry Brown (Michael Caine) which has Emily Mortimer in it, and Def by Temptation (Samuel L. Jackson) with a ban on Jackson. I won two games by escaping from Saturday Night Fever with Short Circuit too, which was almost as funny as jumping from Air Force one to The NeverEnding Story and then killing with Das Boot (or vice versa).

David Gulpilil is still working well too. Welcome to Australia (2008)!

I use Kite for Samuel Jackson.

Fun fact you can use Frances Bay to get into horror from Happy Gilmore. You can use The Pit and the Pendulum to get Stuart Gordon, and she was also in In the Mouth of Madness.

I like the addition of a third starting movie because it makes it harder for people to set opening traps.

Last night I died on UK cinema (somebody knew every Ben Wishaw movie ever made) and then HK cinema, and I was racking my brains for the Maggie Cheung movie from France because it might've saved me but I couldn't pick it in the moment. It's Irma Vep, and I know a couple of links to it via the director.

And this afternoon I went into The Beach Bum as I often do, but this time somebody knew all the other Harmony Korine movies and I got destroyed. Took me a while to look up an escape that worked but I think it's Entertainment (2015) via Kevin Guthrie. Also had two people play Come and See today, linking Adolf Hitler (one from BloodRayne 3 after we went down an Uwe Boll rabbit hole) and then some old documentary with him in it, which was dumb as poo poo. Clean up your database, Cine2Nerdle!

You shouldn't be able to link Hitler, but I do love linking via Donald Trump whenever the opportunity arises. For some reason they don't have Ghosts Can't Do It in the database but they do have Eddie which can be a killer if they don't have their cast lookup anymore.

I saw there was a Donald Trump movie or something but I was wondering what you could link it to because I thought he was in Home Alone 2 and that doesn't work.

I kept linking The Thing (2011) - Mary Elizabeth Winstead whenever I was first out of the gate on yesterday's lineup hoping that someone would educate me on the bottom-billed cast, and eventually someone with a 59-0-0 score came along and took me into what I assume was Scandinavian Cinema. It was the C2N equivalent of being tossed out into the back alley and having the poo poo kicked out of me.

I find a good number of players who know Ken Russell semi-decently though. However, yeah, surprising amount who don't know Altered States.

By the way, today's a great day to get right into Troma out the gate and separate the wheat from the chaff.

Weird experience last night where someone got us to The Man with the Golden Arm, and they had Frank Sinatra blocked. But they neglected to block Otto Preminger so I went to Anatomy of a Murder, and then they totally failed to be able to name a Jimmy Stewart movie. Looked up the cast, skipped back to me, I played The Man from Laramie, and they went down. What an odd movie to try and block someone out with if you can't get out of the most obvious possible escape route.

I assume that's via Asia Argento? I couldn't see any direct link to Dario, but Asia is in Land of the Dead! That's another link into the Romeroverse for me. I really need to do more study on his 70s movies to find as many obscure links as I can. With today's starters I've been going to Dawn of the Dead (2004) frequently just to explore the options because occasionally someone with a killer winrate will pick something unexpected. This is how I learned that the guy from X-men with the ice powers is in an indie movie called Frozen (2010). Now that's the kind of mnemonic that will stick in my head! It also looks like the kind of movie I'd watch since I enjoyed the 47 Meters Down movies and The Shallows. The tower one wasn't great but now that I think of it it has Jeffrey Dean Morgan in it so I'll have to use it.

Another random link I discovered while trying to work out an escape from another Dawn of the Dead guy is Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, which is in the database. So that's another side quest for me. And the other day someone linked King Solomon's Mines (1985) and my eyes went wide because I suddenly remembered watching it as a kid, and I was sure it had John Rhys-Davies in it but I couldn't link it to The Fellowship of the Ring (I think I was panic-typing). Then I remembered it had a sequel and I knew the main guy's name was Alan Quartermain but I couldn't find it... because it's actually spelled Allan with two Ls. Dammit! The second one has James Earl Jones so I'll be tucking that link away (I've killed a lot of people on Patriot Games but this one will be better). They both have Sharon Stone and Richard Chamberlain, of course.

About the only thing I can remember from King Solomon's Mines is one part where a bad guy falls into lava or something and his body immediately explodes, with a terrible cut to the SFX that I thought was lame even as a kid.

And speaking of SFX, I was recently reminded that Bryan Brown is in two 80s movies called F/X and F/X2, both of which also have Brian Dennehy. I've caught a few people with them who've carelessly linked Cocktail, including a top leaderboard player. Bryan Brown is also in The Gods of Egypt (a nice Proyas link since I'm fond of using Dark City for Kiefer Sutherland and Knowing for Rose Byrne, which gets me into Nicholas Cage territory) and he's also in Two Hands (1999) which is another Aussie movie I always try to use for Heath Ledger.

My David Gulpilil game has been refined some more too and I now use The Tracker (2002) as my entry point because it has only seven cast in total (including the writer and director) and frankly, if you know who Gary Sweet is you've earned your escape in my books.

Last random thought on skip bait/killshots: I get a lot with Gerard Butler by going Geostorm first and Plane last. I escape from Plane with Men in Black 3 via Mike Colter but there's probably a more obscure option. And if they've burned their skip already I'll go Kandahar because I haven't looked up the escape from it (I have watched it because Plane was actually really good with some great tactilol stuff at the end that reminded me of Rambo (2008), but Kandahar was not good at all).

Unfortunately I'm not great with martial arts movies. I can muddle through a bit with mainstream options but apart from that all I have is a semi-decent knowledge of Jackie Chan plus Triple Threat and Avengement, oh and The Heroic Trio (though the sequels aren't in the database). Same thing with horror movies where I know a heap of mainstream options and I can do the whole "two blind idiots pulling jenga blocks with Freddy/Jason/Saw/Final Destination movie names on them until one of them gets crushed" thing, but I don't know enough to drag someone off into the weeds.

I'm pretty good at the Bond back and forth where you can jump between the old ones and the new ones with Judi Dench or Desmond Llewelyn (with Never Say Never Again (1983) being a good wild card which doesn't have him or any of the other mainstays apart from Connery in it because of studio fuckery) and I'm good at the Star Trek shuffle as well, doing a similar thing with Majel Barrett (it's good to have a few Nimoy/Shatner off-ramps too like the Miss Congenality movies). Back when Emma Stone movies were part of the meta my favorite destination from Easy A was Star Trek: Generations via Malcolm McDowell.

I went 30-3-10 in yesterday's selection (if they're gonna give you five starting movies they really need to let you save a default set of bans so you don't have to enter them all the time) which I think is my best result yet. I've got good knowledge across most mainstream picks and I know a bunch of meta techs and escapes, but my only niche areas are Australian movies and sort-of Romero flicks. I can do 40-50 movie rallies now with other mainstreamers but as soon as someone picks like an 80s movie I know the name of but not anyone in it I'm like Bruce Willis in Glass dying with my head in a puddle.

To rack up kills quickly it feels like you need in-depth knowledge about the last ten years of movies in particular and how to take every mainstream pick off the rails into either a regional, indie, or niche genre zone. I've kept my Sam Jackson ban for a few days now because I like how it jams up the MCU picks, but sooner or later even my fellow mainstream players are going to learn the escapes from Kite and Def by Temptation. I swear I've been watching in realtime how even low-winrate players learn some of these meta escapes.

A good sequence I learned from someone else is going into Macbeth (2015) for Michael Fassbender. It has Marion Cotillard in it so you risk being taken to France, but fortunately nobody actually saw it so 10 out of 10 times you'll get a second Fassbender tick, then you go Fish Tank (2009) and you're now safely ensconced within the works of Andrea Arnold. Some people have heard of American Honey but nobody knows Red Road, so with those picks plus an escape like The Seagull (which has Annette Bening) you should get some kills. The other advantage is that there are so many Macbeth movies people will waste time on other links unless they know exactly which one to pick.

I got matched with that Moshjurray dude who’s always on the leaderboard and he is in fact very good. I played a few games against him where he crushed me but I finally managed to get the better of him in a 100+ movie match.

He’s very, very good with old Hollywood and tries to steer the game there as much as he can. However, he is in fact weaker in horror and exploitation. I tripped him up on Viggo Mortensen and Texas Chainsaw 3 briefly. But where I nailed him was in kung fu films via Jackie Chan. Threw him off by going with Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin, I’m not sure if it was a lucky guess or not but he went with A Touch of Zen, but he finally went down when I followed that with Come Drink with Me.

Love an actually challenging opponent who plays interesting movies.

I've played a few games against "buttheadfilms" and they always have a bottom-billed cast pick for every movie I link. I think I got to the 40s with them once but I had no hope of winning. When I play against some people with huge winrates I can't help but wonder if I'll ever develop that kind of broad knowledge. Surely there are only so many movies any one person can know!

I did win a game that went into old films today when I remembered the name of an Alistair MacLean book I read a long time ago called Ice Station Zebra, and it turned out they made a movie of it (I linked it from The Guns of Navarone, which in the back of my mind I knew was also written by him).

When I looked at the cast list post-game I saw Rock Hudson, which is a name I'd heard before and I thought he was one of those really famous old timey actors but when I checked IMDB he didn't have many credits and I hadn't actually heard of any of them. Then later I had another game where I was spamming all the old movie titles I could think of and I went to Citizen Kane, but then I lost because the only other Orson Welles movie I could think of was Transformers: The Movie (1986). Oh, and F for Fake, but for some reason that one isn't in the database.

Oh, and I found a movie that flat-out doesn't exist even though it seems pretty mainstream. It's called Savannah and it has Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jim Caviezel and Bradley Whitford. I was going to use it as a third tick and then... it just wasn't there.

Also, when I look at the longest game leaderboard and see 200+ matches I can't help but think they must end when both players lose track of how many three-tick links have been made and one of them gets tripped up.

I'm still playing this and I do pretty well against other mainstream players now, but every time an old movie expert takes me back in time I shake my head and resign early if I can't get back to the recent decades. I've also been wondering if there's an optimal list of soft lifelines to spam like Movie 43/Avengers: Endgame etc. I've come up against some furious typists who go so fast they seem like they're copy/pasting movie names, and it's funny to watch when you know they're not going to get a hit.

Xxx connects to the MCU with both main actors then you to go Hulk - Glass onion - notting hill for British cinema and then you can throw random Mischa Barton movies out to confuse people.

One thing I’ve found that really confuses people is getting them to bonfire of the vanities and when they skip that go to Kirsten Dunst movies

Yea I mean the bottom line is that most people aren't going to be able to build up knowledge by rote memorization. Like, the reason I can go back and forth and name way more Christopher Lee movies than most of my opponents isn't because I memorized his wikipedia page. When I discovered Hammer horror I went through a whole phase of watching every possible Lee/Cushing movie I could get my hands on. As of a few years ago I would've had a hard time naming any Bogart movies aside from Casablanca, then I watched a bunch of his stuff so now I know about The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, In A Lonely Place and Treasure of the Sierra Madre, etc etc

If anything playing this game has made me realize how much I've unfortunately drifted from that path in recent years. I used to keep a big list of classic directors and their films that I'd never seen, and I'd make a point of watching stuff from that list and crossing it off. It gets me motivated to get back into exploration mode again instead of just rewatching my established favorites over and over.

C2N getting meta with today's picks. I'm still playing this on and off though having followed it for a long time now it feels like its become really gamer-fied, like everyone slowly learns all the common link kill moves so you have to scroll down the list on IMDB and find something older or more obscure and then put it to work until everyone learns that one too. I don't really mind it though, I'm still finding it to be a good way to discover things to watch and it's fun to trip up someone with a high score, like the 96-5 player I beat today who had no idea who Sofia Boutella is.

With over 500 games now my K/D ratio is just above 2:1 so I'm happy with that. I get some good rallies and learn some stuff every time I play. My longest-standing kill shot that still works is John Goodman into King Ralph or Captive State, usually only if they have no cast lifeline left. It's about a 50/50 chance they know who Johnathan Majors is, but nobody has ever given me a link out of King Ralph. I get a decent number of kills with Australian movies, especially ones with First Nations actors, and my main landmines are Django Unchained, Zack and Mirri Make a Porno, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, because they all have Tom Savini and I have him banned now alongside George A. Romero. What can I say, it makes me laugh.

Django Unchained can link back to the original Django which can get you deep into spaghetti western territory, especially if you negate any attempts to get out via Ennio Morricone by forcing them into even more obscure spaghetti westerns instead.

Babylon is another meme "scrambling for an answer" movie that is great cause it has Joe Dallesandro so you can link to Flesh for Frankenstein or Blood for Dracula and a good majority of players just straight up don't know who Udo Kier is.

Well now, this is an interesting bunch of links:

I had no idea who Michael Pitt was so I thought I was done here but my opponent perished after doing a cast on Land of the Dead. I'm going to file this one away for future reference though, because while I don't know many Gus Van Sant flicks (apart from Restless, which I use to duck into Mia Wasikowska, which, speaking of, they need to add Blueback - I watched it the other day and it's good!) I am well-versed in the Harmony Korine shuffle, having been on the receving end of it many times in the past.

Before this game I lost because the only Bruce Lee movie I could name was Enter the Dragon. I was surprised my brain couldn't come up with another one, so after that game I started exploring the works of Tony Liu (I lost to Fist of Fury and The Big Boss). I was hoping I'd find a few links to some of the modern HK stuff I know, and I've already found one link to Tony Leung and I'm sure there's more. It's fun to explore IMDB like this with the dual motivations of curiosity and "winning the movie trivia game."

I'm definitely going to go to Flesh for Frankenstein next time someone links me Babylon too, that's a funny move. And my main use of Morricone is to get me the hell back to the modern day with The Hateful Eight, but I am slowly exploring some old movie territory. Someone pulled The Hands of Orlac on me after I linked Casablanca during my death throes one time. That mf'er is 100 years old!

edit: drat, someone just escaped from my Flesh for Frankenstein link by spamming movies and they got a hit with Wall Street (Monique Van Vooren). So I guess that's another entry point.
