I can post overtly Nazi rhetoric, but I can't post a naked dude. Because Free Speech™. Somehow I'm not totally convinced I buy the line, 'We hate nazi's ideology, BUT...'

Nazi porn could be an interesting test case

Isn't this the company where there was some interviewer gave them a total softball question about banning hate speech and the CEO refused to take a position on it, which then became the focus of the interview?

https://www.theverge.com/23681875/substack-notes-twitter-elon-musk-content-moderation-free-speech

quote:

Wow. I mean, I just want to be clear, if somebody shows up on Substack and says “all brown people are animals and they shouldn’t be allowed in America,” you’re going to censor that. That’s just flatly against your terms of service.

So, we do have a terms of service that have narrowly prescribed things that are not allowed.

That one I’m pretty sure is just flatly against your terms of service. You would not allow that one. That’s why I picked it.

So there are extreme cases, and I’m not going to get into the–

Wait. Hold on. In America in 2023, that is not so extreme, right? “We should not allow as many brown people in the country.” Not so extreme. Do you allow that on Substack? Would you allow that on Substack Notes?

I think the way that we think about this is we want to put the writers and the readers in charge–

No, I really want you to answer that question. Is that allowed on Substack Notes? “We should not allow brown people in the country.”

I’m not going to get into gotcha content moderation.

This is not a gotcha... I’m a brown person. Do you think people on Substack should say I should get kicked out of the country?

I’m not going to engage in content moderation, “Would you or won’t you this or that?”

That one is black and white, and I just want to be clear: I’ve talked to a lot of social network CEOs, and they would have no hesitation telling me that that was against their moderation rules.

Yeah. We’re not going to get into specific “would you or won’t you” content moderation questions.

You have to figure out, “Should we allow overt racism on Substack Notes?” You have to figure that out.

No, I’m not going to engage in speculation or specific “would you allow this or that” content.

You know this is a very bad response to this question, right? You’re aware that you’ve blundered into this. You should just say no. And I’m wondering what’s keeping you from just saying no.

I have a blanket [policy that] I don’t think it’s useful to get into “would you allow this or that thing on Substack.”

If I read you your own terms of service, will you agree that this prohibition is in that terms of service?

I don’t think that’s a useful exercise.

Boy, that CEO sure is trying his best to say he won't ban blatant hate speech! Well, at least with this latest development we can say they've been consistent since the beginning.

Leading tech journalist quits Substack over platform’s Nazi newsletters

Seems like some of their big names have had enough:

quote:

Platformer, a prominent tech newsletter founded by the veteran reporter Casey Newton, is leaving Substack over the company’s failure to police extremist content.

In a post explaining the decision, Newton said his team had identified seven Substack publications “that conveyed explicit support for 1930s German Nazis and called for violence against Jews, among other groups”. He said after weeks of back-and-forth discussions with company leaders about their “laissez-faire approach to content moderation”, he decided to part ways with the platform.

“We didn’t ask Substack to solve racism,” Newton wrote in a post explaining the decision. “We asked it to give us an easy, low-drama place to do business, and to commit to not funding and accelerating the growth of hate movements. Ultimately we did not get either.”

I just want to make it clear that we don’t like Nazis either—we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views. Given that, we don’t think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away—in fact, it makes it worse.

We believe that supporting individual rights and civil liberties while subjecting ideas to open discourse is the best way to strip bad ideas of their power. We are committed to upholding and protecting freedom of expression, even when it hurts.

Hmm, yes, that worked particularly well with German nazis in WWII (and in the years leading up to it), now didn't it (NOT).

What the everloving gently caress is wrong with the likes of Substack fuckhead management and dickhead Elon? Have they never been on any internet forums where "free" speech was allowed by the rules and seen them quickly become overrun with nazis and other racist and fascist types?

Where do these assclowns get the idea that giving nazis a free platform with easy access to new members is better than than denying it, thereby making them pay all setup, hosting and maintenance costs for their own lovely much tinier websites?

:dafuq: Are all the management and website owner shitheads making this policy change the worst of chuds, very ignorant noobs, naive fools, or are they just loving plain loving stupid?

Edit: Minor clarification re "making them pay".
