After trimming down the award categories for 2023, we had a grand total of four ballots submitted. Look, I realize that we’re all so very tired, and everything outside of the ring and cage is horrible to look at, and hell, sometimes the fights themselves are nothing more than highly processed Content Slop, and more and more often it feels like the whole MMA world is just for the screeching reactionaries, but four ballots? That sucks, friends. [X] First Place Votes (Y) Total Points Received 1st place votes receive 3.03 points, 2nd place gets 2.02 and 3rd place provides 1.00 points for tie-breaking purposes. Coolest Fighter of the Year  1. Patchy Mix [2] (8.08) 2. Francis Ngannou [1] (5.05) 3. Alexander Volkanovski [1] (3.03) Patchy Mix has been a top fighter in Bellator for a long time, having gone 7-1 in the promotion heading into 2023. This past year, he finally got the proper recognition with his two victories. In April, Mix faced Interim Bantamweight champ Raufeon Stots, himself 7-0 under the Bellator banner, in the Finals of the Grand Prix. It should have been an interesting matchup between Mix’s submission grappling and Stots’s wrestling game. Instead, Mix landed a step-up knee and knocked out Stots in 80 seconds. Next, Mix took on Undisputed Bantamweight champ Sergio Pettis, who was 5-0 in Bellator in November. This time, Mix showcased his grappling acumen, submitting Pettis in the second round. Fight of the Year  1. Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski - UFC 284 [3] (11.11) 2. Brandon Moreno vs Alexandre Pantoja - UFC 290 [1] (3.03) 3. Geoff Neal vs Shavkat Rakhmanov - UFC 285 [0] (2.02) 3. Irene Aldana vs Karol Rosa - UFC 296 [0] (2.02) Alexander Volkanovski had effectively cleared out Featherweight, so what worlds were there left for him to conquer but the one ten pounds heavier? Blocking his path to historic greatness was Islam Makhachev, a powerful force in his own right. For twenty-five minutes these men battled, trading strikes and engaging in spirited grappling exchanges throughout. At the end of the fight, Makhachev won on the score cards, Volkanovski looked extremely good, and the discourse and takes ran rampant for weeks. Event of the Year  1. UFC 295 [1] (5.05) 2. UFC 285 [1] (4.03) 3. UFC 290 [1] (3.03) UFC 295’s main card featured a perfect 100% finish rate, and even with a pair of title bouts in the top two spots, there was only 21:33 worth of cage time. Diego Lopes punched out Pat Sabatini in 90 seconds, while Benoit Saint-Denis needed 91 seconds to complete his head kick KO of Matt Frevola. Jessica Andrade’s mighty piledriver fists put away Mackenzie Dern inside of two rounds in the final bout before the two championship tilts. In the co-main event, Tom Aspinall met Sergei Pavlovich for the Interim Heavyweight title. The hard hitting heavyweights clashed violently and briefly, with Aspinall knocking out Pavlovich in a very nice 69 seconds. In the main event, the vacant Light Heavyweight title was up for grabs as former champ-in-absentia, Jiri Prochazka was looking to regain the belt he never lost inside the cage against former Middleweight champ, Alex Pereira. Yair Rodriguez vs Josh Emmett (Triangle choke) - UFC 284 [0] (3.03) For years, fight fans talked about Valentina Shevchenko as a perfect warrior. A former Muay Thai and kickboxer who had a very good grappling game. Also for years, non-perverts argued that she threw a lot of really dumb spinning poo poo. Finally, the non-perverts were vindicated, and their salvation came at the hands of Alexa Grasso, a boxer, who dodged Valentina’s clumsy wheel kick, hopped on her back, and smashed Shevchenko’s mandibular bones with a fourth round face crank to capture UFC Flyweight gold. Also for years, Holly Holm was allowed to run roughshod over the mid-tier ranked fighters at Bantamweight. She accomplished this with a unique blend of scuttling kickboxing and prolonged cage clinches. Thankfully, Mayra Bueno Silva decided to Do Something About It. Seconds into the second round, Holm pressed Silva to the fence and whoops, Holly got caught in a nasty ninja choke. Coolest Moment of the Year  1. Francis Ngannou drops Tyson Fury [4] (12.12) 2. Mike Breeden was having a tough time against Anshul Jubli, until, in a moment of pure artistic inspiration, Breeden started barking like a mad dog at Jubli. Most fighters aren’t equipped to handle their opponents suffering a mental breakdown so openly, and Jubli was no exception. He short-circuited, allowing Breeden the opportunity to punch his face off. Worst Bureaucratic Malfeasance of the Year  1. Victor Henry’s testicles get destroyed, except the ringside physician say no, they weren’t. [2] (8.08) 1. PFL screws Raush Manfio and Natan Schulte out of a playoff spot in favor of Shane Burgos [0] (4.04) 1. Jalin Turner kills Bobby Green while Kerry Hatley looks on in vague indifference [1] (4.03) Poor, poor Victor Henry. It’s got to suck to take a groin shot even at the best of times. But then when a presumably trained and licensed doctor calls you a big fibbing liar, that’s got to add a salt and lemon juice sting to the already painful situation. Raush Manfio and Natan Schulte aren’t just training partners, they are very close friends. They didn’t put on the most aggressive or violent fight, but it wasn’t like either man laid down for the other, either. Unfortunately, their lack of inflicted damage was enough of an excuse for PFL to officially suspend both men for not putting on a competitive bout, allowing free agent signee Shane Burgos to advance to the PFL Playoffs. There’s putting a thumb on the scale and then there’s loudly dragging a chair across the room to sit on the scale and act like nothing suspicious has occurred. Late stoppages are nothing new in MMA. Over the years, any number of refs have been the poster child of incompetence. Kerry Hatley doesn’t have much of a reputation for being a bad ref, so in this case, going unnoticed is probably a good sign someone’s doing a good job. This time was different. Jalin Turner knocked Bobby Green down, and it should have taken about two seconds of follow-up punches to wave off the fight. Hatley stood there for about ten as Turner landed over fifteen unnecessary blows.

Thanks for doing all this work, and sorry for not submitting a ballot this year, I just fell off of UFC a lot for a variety of different reasons. I could at least have added another vote to TKZ's retirement for Coolest Moment of the Year and gotten it up 3rd place by itself instead of shared
