Wanna run with my crew huh? Rule cyberspace and crunch numbers like I do?

We had a slot cpu in one of our first computers, a pentium two with a big ol heat sink but no fan. One day while trying to mess around in the case I brushed my hand against it and oh boy those things get hot :piss:

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
do you know whyyyyyy they came in slots tho?

Yield on cache memory was SUPER lovely back in the day so instead of throwing a bunch of good cpus with bad on-die cache in the garbage, they put the cache on separate chips on the card.

fuck that joker
Slots always felt cooler than sockets. GPUs come in slots now, so why don't CPUs? The ideal machine is a big mainboard with a whole bunch of extension cards, like an Apple II.

I guess a rack with rack servers in it is a bit like that, but I can't afford that.

that was the s/100 architecture iirc. just a backplane and then youd plug in a cpu card and i/o etc

i've done a few builds of open hardware projects recently. its fun to pick a wacky color for your pcb print job. i do want to do a 6502 homebrew computer eventually.
