I think those people also maintain a perimeter of thousands of small bladed plants around their dwellings as some sort of mild deterrent it doesn't appear to cause any grave harm, but must be moderately uncomfortable as most avoid walking on it, and children are often discouraged from any contact for their own good some animals appear to have adapted a tougher hide perhaps, or maybe it's their coat of fur that can negate any irritation weird stuff over there, either way
