MTV promoted it for weeks, and it likely didn't help that the first Gulf War was fairly popular with both the right and the left and the mainstream media in the 90s as it was happening and afterwards for a long time. But nothing about his song except a few vague references to the middle east and war seems to be an actual 'protest' song. In some places, it feels like the images would be pro-war a decade or so later. edit 2: It feels like an Earth Day song in this version.
