I'm moving to the Bay Area in early August to start law school at UC Hastings. I'm planning to live in a student apartment complex provided by UCSF in the Mission Bay part of town. My options are getting a 2BR and finding a roommate or getting a single room in a 4BR where the housing office coordinates the other 3 roommates. My preference is definitely towards fewer roommates. The cool thing is only the lease holder is required to be an affiliated student, though this complex would probably appeal less to non-students. I'm open to either so long as the person respects that I'll need to study at the apartment. Here's a link with a little more information (I'd be aiming for the $1633 2BR): http://campuslifeservices.ucsf.edu/housing/mb/

Never heard any complaints about them and he wound up getting hired on full-time at his current job after temping for a while. If anyone with a degree needs some work to do while they take night classes for their MA (like me) or whatever, may I recommend substitute teaching? The local districts (I work for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District) don't have nearly enough subs. School is out now but I was working every schoolday in May and June at just one school (my old HS, and I had nine separate offers one day) and then going to class at 4:00 at CSUH, and it's probably the easiest goddamn job in the universe. And it's really flexible...if you can't work on Tuesdays and Thursdays because of classes, no problem. If you don't want to work a day, just don't answer the phone the night before. Mostly you show up, take attendance, and show movies (the downside to this is that I once had to show the end of Schindler's List over and over for seven hours...). One day I came in for one 90-minute period, screwed around on the Internet the entire time playing chess with some students, and got paid for a half-day of work. I woke up at 10 AM and was done with work before lunch. On top of that, I worked at the local EB the whole time I was an undergrad, and a bunch of the kids still recognize me even with my suit and tie, so while I rarely did any actual teaching I gave a lot of lectures on WoW and CS. Getting your sub permit is kind of a nightmare, though. The CBEST is really easy but it took me weeks to get my results and weeks to acquire and submit the proper paperwork...I took the CBEST in February and started subbing in May. I only worked for a couple of weeks before they told me I could start collecting unemployment over the summer. The joke here is that I'm a libertarian pursuing my doctorate in economics and the government pays me to watch movies all year and then sit on my rear end doing nothing all summer while all those hardworking taxpaying socialists support me

I'm moving to Berkeley sometime in August from socal. It looks like apartments are a bit nicer and cheaper in Albany and El Cerrito versus right by campus but I'm wondering how bad the commuting is? Are there any other good areas to be looking? I've got a budget of about 1000-1100 for rent/utilities. I've got a car but I assume it'll be next to impossible to actually get to campus in it.

I've wanted to move to San Francisco since I was first there as a teenager (I've been back nearly a dozen times for conferences and interviews and vacations). I'm finally doing it, and need some help understanding the apartment situation. I'm going to fly out to look at apartments and sign a lease in order to move in Sep 1. I'm wondering when the best time to schedule my flight will be? I see everything on craigslist still appears to be "available now" or Aug 1. When do the Sep 1 listings hit? Last few days of July? First few of August? I want to be there when the Sep 1 listings are on the market, but the good ones aren't snapped up yet. Also, I've heard about the existence of "rental agents" who can take your requirements, and set up a bunch of viewings for you based on them, and that (even though they're not supposed to), they sometimes have access to listings that don't get posted elsewhere. I can't, though, find one of these creatures that's not affiliated with a specific landlord company. Does anyone have any leads? Is this worthy of its own post?

But if you do live further away, just be near a BART station. The downtown Berkeley stop is just a couple of blocks from campus. Seconded. If you're going to be living north of campus, just live near a BART station and you'll be covered. It's a few bucks every day, but with gas prices around here the way they are, plus what it costs for a parking permit at a UC lot... it's worth it. Plus, BART is useful for getting around in general, especially if you want a trip to San Francisco.

Ok, so no one could help me with my last post - I'm just going to go out there next week then, and work craigslist like a madman. Any moderately priced hotel recommendations? I searched the thread and found the Savoy and Andrews, both of which look like almost exactly what I'd like, except I'd like a smoking room Any other places like that you guys have liked? The last time I was there (for work), and had a rental car, it was pretty useless and expensive to park, so I just returned it. Since it seems like all the hotels are on one side of the city, and the residential neighborhoods are on the other, should I get a car, or will I be alright taking a bus or a cab around to look at apartments all day?

I'd say an all day muni pass gets you around the city pretty easily. You can ride the muni subways (not bart), buses and the cable cars even. I think it's $11 for an all day pass. I'd definately go that route over parking there any day.

Yeah don't get a car, it's a pain in the rear end and totally unnecessary here. Do you know what neighborhoods you are looking in? Unless you are looking in one of the outer neighborhoods like the Richmond or Sunset or Stonestown or something, it's pretty quick and easy to get to all the different neighborhoods by bus. And as for the outer neighborhoods, it can take a while, but it does in a car too.

Sabacc posted:How hard is it to commute from East Bay to, say Redwood City? I have the prospects of a new job, but I'm not too thrilled to be in the south there, and I fear San Francisco's housing prices. I regularly travel from Berkeley to Redwood City. Here's what I do: Get on the BART. Pay attention to which transfers you need to make - from the Richmond line, you generally need to transfer at Macarthur (12th street when going back to Berkeley) and again at Balboa Park. Go all the way to the end of the Millbrae line. At Millbrae, transfer to the CalTrain, which will take you straight to downtown Redwood City. Total trip is about 2 hrs. If you have a car, it's much easier, although traffic on the Nimmitz is ungodly during rush hour. If you avoid rush hour, it's about 45 minutes. The cost is about the same when you weight gas+tolls versus train fares.

I'm not so worried about total travel time, I just abhor driving. I'm wondering, though: is it quicker to take the BART all the way down, and then take CalTrain? Or take CalTrain somewhere in San Fran all the way? The Internet tells me it is only 30 minutes from the San Francisco station to Redwood City (assuming express), or even just 10 minutes from Millbrae.

The Millbrae station is the only station where both BART and CalTrain stop. You could theoretically transfer in the City, but there'd be some serious walking/biking involved, perhaps about a mile. The Millbrae station is designed for transfers. If you caught the express, then the train is much faster, but you'd still have to walk/bike/pay for a cab.

Of course, if anyone has the inside track on a nice 1 or 2br opening up Sep 1, you know whom to PM Thanks guys. Inner Richmond isn't that bad, the Outer takes a while longer. My girlfriend's brother lives out at 43rd Ave. and it takes him forever to get anywhere. Although he has an awesome view of the ocean and half the city out his window. The thing with the Richmond is that you are pretty much dependant on the 38 to get to the rest of the city and even though it comes fairly frequently that bus can be kind of a drag as it's usually crammed full.

Even then taking the 1 would be a better option. The 38 is a major pain in the neck for me because it's twice as long; the 33 is a godsend when it comes to taking me from home to work.

Just about any time I see someone lying in the street because they've been hit by a car or something like that I'll look over and see the cab that hit them parked nearby. They drive like poo poo in residential neighborhoods too, there are times when I've thought I was about to be killed because the fuckholes will PASS YOU on a residential street if you're not going super fast. So you're essentially paying way too much money to fear for your life.

Matlock, the answer to all of your questions is Yes. And it's not hard to find. Stay out of Hunter's Point. Don't feed the homeless. Crowded areas generally aren't dangerous....and many places are always crowded. Expect many insane people, but not necessarily dangerous people. Be smart, it'll be fine. SF has probably the best Wi-Fi I've ever seen. Infact, I've seen spraypainted areas marking off the best areas. I think someone had time on their hands. For touristy places, stop in a hotel and grab some brochures. Or, just go for a walk. Kobalt fucked around with this message at 02:23 on Aug 10, 2006 |
