I started reading Erfworld because people were mentioning it in this thread, but I just can't like it. Is it a matter of not being a big enough nerd in whatever game they're sort of spoofing? Is OoTS this terrible to people that don't play DnD?

Ashcans posted:Is OoTS this terrible to people that don't play DnD? As a person who doesn't play DnD, let me be the first to say that it absolutely is not. The difference is that Erfworld is more drama based, I suppose, with the occasional joke, and OotS leans slightly more comedically with dramatic moments.

I got curious and read the first 40 strips of Erfworld and I'd simply classify it as being bad, since I didn't find it to be funny and its story isn't engaging or interesting. The presence of stupid internet catchphrases such as the "oh really" owl and all the cutesy names certainly don't do it a favor; and the ham-fisted attempt to spice up the comic via lesbian B&D was also quite stupid and unnecessary. I wonder how much of that webcomic is simply what its author wishes he could be.

I've mentioned this before but I think it's based on how much of a boner the idea of a world controlled by the rules of a boardgame gives you. That and how much "cute" names for common fantasy elements amuse you (LOL DWAGONS).

I just realized something. The current OotS comic is named "The Longshot." Haley is literally making a long shot. Holy poo poo!

I didn't see anyone mention why "fire" is wrong in this case. You don't fire an arrow, you fire a gun, as in set fire to the powder dealy. Or at least you used too. And like Efreet saiid said it doesn't really matter plus I think I've read them use "fire" before. http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0425.html

Once upon a time, yes, but now it's a generic english word for shoot the thingy at the other thingy. Setting fire to powder is merely word origins, and is covered under they don't speak English but they are anyway clause.

Two of them make it into the towe with them, and while it's possible that the other three are killed by the arrowstorm, I doubt that there are only ten people on the outer wall. WHether or not Hinjo is alive is an important question to a large number of people, and so i imagine a lot of people are watching him, both in person, and through agents.

Also, they could probably see Elan and Haley from that angle. Wanderer fucked around with this message at 19:45 on May 22, 2007 |

I can't believe this. People here are actually arguing that you can "fire" an arrow from a bow. Hey, I've got a gun, it unstacks bullets. And my car prances down the road, taking me to the restaurant where I'll adsorb some food. As to the illusion: I think that the tremendous cheesiness is part of the joke. Remember that this is (or at least was) a comic about the humorous things that you'd get if you actually lived life according to the D&D rules. Remember that early comic where a dragon breathes fire on the party. Everyone falls over screaming, except Haley, who is completely untouched--she's got Evasion, see? So even though she doesn't actually do anything and the fire completely surrounds her, she isn't hurt by it. \/\/\/ haha, "adsorb" doesn't go through anything... Really why is everyone getting so bent out of shape about the word fire? When used as an intransitive verb fire is correctly used to indicate the launching or sending off of a projectile, but it really doesn't matter it's a humor comic not a treatise on the english language, modern readers know the word fire means to shoot, so the writer uses the word fire to mean shooting. PS. Volley is first attributed in 1573 (from the middle French Volee [flight]), Fire in the shooing sense to ~1530 so volley wouldn't have been the historic word either. To get back to the comic, does anyone else hope they remove the mark from Belkar soon?

I almost wish the Mark of Justice was worded differently - if it specified "within the bounds of Azure City" then it wouldn't have to ever be taken off. I'd also like to mention that the Wikipedia entry for OotS is kind of terrifyingly long. Note the links at the bottom for other related pages.
