How safe do you need it? I would think the cheaper you get, the lighter it will be. Look for some sort of junky DOT only helmet at your local bike shop.

Many dirt bike helmets get close to the 1200g mark since they don't have visors. Typically I've found that the cheaper helmets are heavier than the pricier ones.

This is 1050 grams: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/urban-helmets/n350-moto.htm

1179 grams: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/dainese/jet-stream-tourer/

You can get into full face helmet weights around 1400 grams. BMW makes a crazy $1000 full face helmet the Sport Intergal Carbon that weighs a straight 1 kilo.

Don't use thread unless you have kevlar thread, the thread will be the weak point and it'll come apart with enough force. I use strong fishing line or strong dental floss when I add zippers to jackets.

Let us know how those gloves are once you get them. I currently have a perforated pair that I love as long as it's over 75 degrees and an insulated pair that I hate, but is decent below 50 degrees. I'd like a solid leather pair for the in between temps come fall.

Got the gloves in today and they feel GREAT on the hands! Really can't wait to get out and ride with them on later today. Lucky for me I get off work at 2:30, so I should have something to report back to you. One thing that I really like about them so far is that they look a lot smaller on my hands than I thought they would. I guess the picture I saw from new enough had me thinking of half the forearm gauntlets. Very soft on the inside. Solid/quality feel to them.

Is anyone interested in a pair of Sidi Vertebra Aire boots in sz44?

They're quite well worn but still a good set of boots for someone on a budget.

It's garage cleaning time again I think.

Not sure if the 44 is too big or not, what size in regular shoes are you?

Somewhere between a 9.5-10.5 depending on who makes the shoe.
44 Euro works out to 10-10.5 US.

These gloves are great! They just feel like they were meant to be wrapped around the bars of the r6. My hands feel very confident in them. The weather doesn't seem like it'd be an issue at all. When I left for my ride tonight it was up in the high 80s. On the way home it had dropped quite a bit, however my hands never even noticed the difference. I will however have to give them some time to get worn into as I did notice what seemed to be one or two hotspots right in the area just under my pinky. All and all I've very happy with them and quickly spring for another pair.

Hey,

Does anyone have any experience with riding jeans/casual wear that doesn't look funky when you're not on your bike?

More specifically, http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=&L2=&L3=&L4=&item=PAR_i301-230_G&tier2=10
and
http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=&L2=&L3=&L4=&item=PAR_3010-0055_G&tier2=10

Are they worth it? Are they good protection? Better then current, which is a set of BDU pants?

They're slightly better than regular jeans in that they're not supposed to tear if you're sliding, but they have zero impact protection.

You want energy absorption. Steel isn't exactly the best thing for that. If you really want a pair of jeans but with impact protection, look to getting some stand alone armor to go underneath.
http://www.newenough.com/browse/armor/elbow_shoulder_knee_worn_on_the_body

Honestly, I rode all last year with just regular jeans (the kind that fall apart if you fall) and still only wear jeans to work for convenience. However, I got a decent pair of leather pants and those are always my first choice when riding. They are so much more comfortable than jeans.

I have a pair of these, they fit and wear like normal jeans. A bit stiff but yeah there is no real impact protection. The steel lining is only near the rear end and knees.

I typically ride with a pair of Alpinestar mesh pants over a pair of jeans. When I ride without those, I wear a pair of carhartt work pants made out of 12oz. canvas. It's not ideal, but I've slid on this stuff before riding a pedal bike, and a 15mph asphalt skid just scuffed the fabric - I'm assuming that at around-town speeds, it will offer enough protection to at least minimize the road rash. I'll say this much - typical jeans shed in a loving INSTANT on road surfaces. Then you have shreds of fabric to get out of your wounds in addition to road crap. Fun.

To address the "impact protection" issue, Aerostitch sells what is essentially a double-front version of my work pants that have access under the double-front to add kneepads:

http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Aerostich-Arborwear-Gusseted-Canvas-Pants-p-16909.html

Of course, if you want to save some coin, you can just buy canvas work pants with double fronts right from a Carhartt retailer and stick some pads in there. Most double-front work pants don't stitch up the bottom of doubled up area, because a lot of people who buy them stick pads up there to kneel on anyways.

http://carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32068&langId=-1&categoryId=10935

If I could find a version of this pant with a double front and a doubled-up seat as well, that would be all I'd ever wear around town on the bike.

If you like the look of jeans, carhartt also sells a double-fronted logger dungaree made out of 15oz (!) denim.

http://carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32099&langId=-1&categoryId=10935

Hell, I might have to check those out...

EDIT: poo poo - just found these: http://carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=96509&langId=-1&categoryId=10935
Those look like they might do a decent job.

Anyone own an Olympia Phantom suit?

http://www.olympiamotosports.com/phantom/Phantom.htm

Motor Cyclist reviewed them this month and they seemed to like it. It's definitely cheaper than a Roadcrafter from Aerostich.

Does anyone else sell them online? The BMW dealer not too far from where I work carries their stuff according to the website.

Edit: Sorry Skier - you know what's funny, after I made that post I googled "Aerostitch" to go to their website and saw I had mispelled it and thought to myself "I should check to see if that's in the post too...". Then I saw something shiny and got distracted and forgot to check.

Aerostich. It's Aerostich.

And the Phantom seems to be a great choice if you don't mind spending the time getting into the suit. The Roadcrafter's super-fast entry and exit is one of its stronger points: you won't be tempted to go for a quick ride without gear because it's so easy to zip into.

Yeah I called them. In fact I called every website that has them listed as available on the internet. They don't actually have them and MotoGP has ceased to make products so they never will have them, just no one ever bothered to update their databases.

Edit: Looking closer they do actually gave some of the bigger sizes, I'm unfortunately a petite size 30 though, which doesn't exist anywhere.

I got my Alpinestars leather jacket in yesterday and went for a nice long ride. I really need to know... is there a quick way to wear in the leather? Holy cow is this thing stiff. It's rather comfortable while riding and whatnot, just really really stiff. Also, it fits a little snug in the chest area, but I think that if I was to move to the next size up, it would be way to big. I think my only option is to lose some weight. That sound about right?

Hey dudes. I just purchased a new Suzuki M50 and I'm looking to get some accessories for it. I plan on riding my bike into work on nice days and I need to get something to hold my stuff. I work an IT type job, so I carry a laptop bag to and from, and I go to the gym a lot as well so I have a gym bag (it's actually a backpack, but I'm looking to get a regular gym bag). So basically, I'm looking for a pair of saddlebags that are big enough to hold a medium sized laptop bag, and possibly a regular sized gym bag. Would this be possible or are saddlebags too small?

I just got these awesome pants yesterday. I know they're mesh, but I live in Florida and poo poo gets sticky when it gets hot (I've got a perf leather jacket too, but am looking into mesh or textile as well). I'd just like to say that these things are insanely comfortable. I wore them for like two hours last night, sitting at my computer (very low to the ground, so I was a bit scrunched up). No problems with the waist, the knees or anything. I've got a bruised knee bone from where I lowsided (wearing jeans) a month or so ago, and the padded knee didn't even bother it. Highly recommended, hopefully they'll be this comfortable on the bike too.
