Never played one before. Though supposedly the difference with the block letter run is that they used a beefier output transformer and a larger power supply. First thing I'm going to do with it is do the adjustable bias mod. Ain't gonna run no cold tubes in my amp!

Also got one of these bad boys earlier in the week:

It's every bit as fun as you'd imagine.

A few weeks ago, I picked this up on a whim:

A lot of people say that it's voiced like a Mesa, but the gain on it sounds very much like the Marshall Jackhammer (i.e. a hot-rodded JCM 800), with an emphasis on midrange. Either way, a nice pedal, and at lower levels, does a drat good job approximating the early AC/DC sound. The top boost (why I bought the pedal) nails the guitar tone from the first Black Sabbath album perfectly.

MIJ, mid 90s, 650 shipped with Seymour Duncan pickups installed and a Mustang bridge and a buzzstop(that I'll probably remove); great deal. Can't wait for it to get here; I've been dying for the low-sustain sound and it should go great with my SG. It seems like a really spacey and psychedelic instrument!

Also if I ever stop writing songs I could just sit and play the solo from Foxhole for the rest of my life.

Whoa, did you get that from omor)))) from haunting mids or harmony central? That's freaky. Didn't think the two places I post in ever overlapped like that.

Thanks to Agreed's heads up, I grabbed a $20 Wasabi Overdrive and it just came in today. I'm pretty new to effects pedals so I dunno how I'm gonna work it into my chain, but it sounds fantastic by itself with the TV Jones pickups I put in my Artcore earlier this week:

They were a complete hassle to install, but that just might have had something to do with the fact that I didn't really have any idea what I was doing.

Almost at my final round. But I'm planning on this set for next month:

Freakshow Brown Rabbit, a boutique ProCo Rat clone for my main distortion. The Keeley Rat was good, but it was too large and had no LED. I was going to go for a Keeley Rat II, but I thought I'd try this out instead. Can be had for 165 new, about 130 used. Sounds like:

I will also be rewiring my Mustang to that I can switch between series and parallel. There's a Kinman diagram on how to do it here (it's a PDF)

Weber Mini Mass Attenuator

So I can finally crank my amp and keep the volume low. Plus these are at least a QUARTER of the cost of something like those THD Hotplates and Marshall Powerbrakes.

A mustang. I wanted a vintage sound, but hotter. I may end up getting Seymour Duncan Antiquity II's, though, because I can get those used for about half the price.

The Weber is a no brainer. I can't crank my amp very much, and my fuzzes don't respond very well when I use a volume pedal. I considered attenuators before, but they're just too drat expensive, and I thought about being one of those Vox Amplugs so I could use headphones. But the Weber is less than twice the price of the Amplugs.

On eBay. I've seen used AII's go for very little. If it doesn't work, oh well.

Fralins aren't as popular and they just came out with their mustang pickups, so there's no used ones on eBay.

Epiphone Les Paul Elite Hollow-Body.

I want a fixed bridge guitar either for playing blues or for tuning down for stoner rock/metal, and I think this might do both. Someone give me some advice.

Well, assuming that's a semi-hollow, a semi-hollow les paul is essentially the ideal stoner rock guitar IMO. Throw in some pickups with ballsy mids (GFS dream 180s, duncan pearly gates or SH-5 or SH-11s, dimarzio super IIs) and I don't think it gets any better.

If it's a fully hollow (which would weird me out) then it's gonna feed back wayyyyy too easily to play downtuned stoner rock/metal.

Then again, I think the f-hole on the cutaway side looks kind of stupid myself. It's a tough call.

It's a semi-hollow, it has a chambered mahogany body and a maple cap with the f-holes cut through to the chambers. There isn't much info about it online, so I'm not sure how much the f-holes effect the sound, apart from adding sustain, so I can't be sure on how it differs from a regular Les Paul. I'm not sure if this thing will do metal as well as a LP Custom would.

Yeah, the f-hole going between the knobs is a little strange but it would look much worse if it wasn't symmetrical.

If you wanna do face-melting kinds of metal like groove or thrash where you're palm muting crazy bullshit all the time I think the semi-hollow body is gonna give you too mushy of a sound. I play things that would fall into both stoner rock and stoner metal and I love my semi-hollow, FWIW. For doom metal, sludge, stoner metal, etc, I think you'll like the depth it adds to your crunch and the command it gives you over feedback. Sure sounds like you need to actually play it before you'll know, hope you can.

He plays the Dot at I think most shows these days (love to see famous artists using dirt-cheap gear that's just solid.) He plays his Maton BB1200 and Motorave Bel Aire (both semi-hollow) most of the rest of the time, and Troy plays his signature semi-hollow Yamaha SA503TVL more often than not. Bottom line, yeah, if you like QotSA guitar sounds from Lullabies onwards you have probably been listening to a semi-hollow.

While we're on examples, another (incidentally non stoner) modern rock band where you hear semi-hollows is Silversun Pickups. Their guitarist Brian has a lot of variety in his sound from shiny cleans to nasty fuzz and plays a semi-hollow Epiphone Casino pretty much all the time.

Man I like semi-hollows.

Pop the back off and take a picture of the insides, I'm know it can be nailed down to a specific era based on how the components are put together.

I'd really like a Ravelle but it would have to be shipped halfway round the world and I don't really want to pay for that and still risk having the thing damaged.

So the guy updated his ad today because I asked him to show some damage to it that he had mentioned.

It's a small chip on the neck, the bit on the right is just flash reflection. Not too bad, it's a black guitar so I could probably get that touched up if I wanted. Really it's the price that's tempting me with this one, I can get it with the hardcase for less than the price of a new Epi Standard.

The price of meat has just gone up, and your old lady has just gone down

Finally managed to record some clips of the THD that don't suck. Part of this is having taken the time to get to know the amp, part of it is finally figuring out a way to mic my cab with the mics I have, not the mics I want, and still get a good recording that isn't plagued by constant mic clipping. gently caress you false claims of high SPL handling.

Backing tracks are courtesy of some guy at Harmony Central who thinks I'm a prick because I spent time arguing against the retards who wanted a mod removed for banning them for 3 days for trolling. Thanks dude, your backing tracks .

These clips are of the THD Univalve, with the rock input at 1/4 gain. Guitar-->Wah-->Amp. I am using attenuation and I am using noise reduction. The attenuator is set at about 1/2 of its range, which gave approximately 8-9db or thereabouts of attenuation. No dirt pedals, just the amp, my wah, and my strat. The wah is strongly featured on the first track, and not at all on the second, because I wanted to show how it sounds with and without a wah. I don't know why, it made sense last night. Also - the guitar's volume knob and the amp's volume remain the same throughout. The only thing I change is how I'm picking at any given time.

I have done some post-recording work on these to fit them in the mix. Nothing intense, but I thought after the previous clips I've made where it doesn't gel because I didn't do anything to it, it might be useful to see how it sounds with just a bit of studio work.

First track, with wah:
