I think the best album is The End, but FIF is one of my top 3 favorite bands and I'd place all the CDs very close to each other. All The Hype That Money Can Buy - I personally would say start with this. I feel the variety of songs and styles is the broadest on this CD, if there's nothing on here you like, you probably won't find anything else from them that you like. Electric Boogaloo - You could start with this too. This is probably their "hardest" or most "aggressive" album, but it's FIF, so that's not that aggressive. This is closer to a "punk with horns" or "rock with horns" CD than most of their others. edit: I just looked at the track listing of all their CDs I have (which is... every single one). I'm not good for this. I honestly think every single one of them is great. Electirc Boogaloo is probably the most "accessible" though. Stop hatin' on skanking, skanking is super-fun, I love just goin' to a ska show and skankin' it up in my creepers, when those horns come in it's like "RUDY YOU CAN'T FAIL" and next thing you know I'm skankin' all over the place and also loving prostitutes.

Look, it's a shame that most of the traditional two-tone Brit ska bands have died out, but at least the fine strapping lads of Orange County have stepped up to deliver quality ska in their absence.

so I took a capoeira class today and you may not think its ska-related but thank god for my years of skanking. There were kids who couldn't do the movements, but by modifying my basic skanking posture I was able to get the basic stance down. Its not EXACTLY the same but damned if this is the first time skanking has proven useful outside of embarassing myself in public

So a recently-gained sax friend asked me today if I wanted to play trumpet in a ska band. I was all, "Hell yes, about goddamn time!" I'm excited to see how this shapes up. It's gonna be crazy awesome with five horn players.

Less Than Jake's Vinnie Fiorello spilled the beans in a recent interview with Australia's Triple-J and our good friend Stu Harvey managed to get a few details out of him. First, the band is currently putting "the finishing touches" on the new full length, and first for their newly launched Sleep It Off Records, with plans for it to be released on June 24th, 2008. The band is working with Matt Allison (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms, Copyrights, Methadones) in Chicago. Along with mentioning the album, Vinnie talks at length about the bands new reissues, their extensive back catalogue and what the future holds for Less Than Jake. You can check out the entire interview here.

Some of you guys might want to check out this podcast: http://media.libsyn.com/media/thescallywagshow/SKACAST.mp3 Its a podcast done by a guy called barnacle brian, and the podcasts are usually celtic/folk punk, but he released this one last summer, and it is all ska music with a celtic punk twinge. Few of the bands on it are The Trojans, The Specials, Joe Strummer, Paddy Rasta, Warblefly. Shane MacGowan, Bloord or Whiskey, The Pogues and the Skels. I think its got some pretty awesome tracks on it, mainly because I love my ska and love my celtic punk. Im not sure about The Specials cover of Dirty Old Town though...

I hope maintains some Vinnie has control over it. edit: Checked over which stuff he actually produced. I thought he did recent Alkaline Trio stuff, but he hasn't done anything of theirs since 2001, so that's good. The production quality he does sounds about on level with the production of Anthem, which was a pretty good compromise of balance and levels, emotion and energy. I'd still rather have the production like Losing Streak had. Mysterious Aftertaste fucked around with this message at 22:21 on Apr 10, 2008 |

I'm not sure if you've heard The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, or The Copyrights, but those motherfuckers have some pretty fantastically produced albums. I see this as quite a good thing, and a hopeful step in the right direction for LTJ. If the production quality on their next album is half as good as that of Oh, Calcutta by The Lawrence Arms, it will be fantastically well done. I mean, gently caress, he produced Goddamnit by Alkaline Trio, and I'll be damned if that isn't the best produced album for $1000 on the face of the earth.

And this is going back in the conversation a bit, but in regards to the production on LTJ's pezcore, I too love the squeak of the pedal in the intro to Mike Sinkovich. Oddly, that squeak is made much more audible in the remaster. In the original, you can barely hear it.

Some friends of mine had Bomb the Music Industry crash at their place in Ottawa all weekend. Now two of them are traveling with the band to Guelph, and then the next day to Toronto, to stay at another friend's house. I'm going to be heading to Guelph tomorrow night to see them, and I'll probably hit up the Toronto show the next day too.

The Streetlight show in Ft. Lauderdale was great. Watch it Crash We Will Fall Together Mephisto's Cafe Receiving End of it All Failing, Flailing Here's to Life It's a Wonderful Life Linoleum (NOFX cover) 40 Days We Are the Few If and When We Rise Again encore: Dear Sergio Somewhere in the Between A Moment of Silence A Moment of Violence I might have missed a song or two, but that's roughly how it went (I know the last 4 are right)

I'm excited to see them Thursday! I've seen them about a dozen times already, but I won't ever forget my first Streetlight show. It was like four years ago with Big D and ASOB, and I only knew a couple of their songs. I remember getting my rear end kicked in the pit for so long since most of their songs are in the four to five minute plus range; There was the perfect number of people there to have an awesome pit but not be smashed and crowded. Has anyone listened to the new Slackers CD?!

It's a very good cover. I don't know what they've done at other shows, but it was Tomas (acoustic, vocals), Conti (vocals), Chris (drums) and Pete (electric upright). Actually towards the very end Matt Stewart came in too. No other horns, though. I kind of want to see what other NOFX songs would be like if they were all kind of acousticized. I love NOFX as it is, but this was an awesome version of Linoleum. There were a lot of people that didn't know the song at all, but I was freaking out. I was not expecting a NOFX cover.
